EPA administrator Scott Pruitt resigns

Embattled EPA chief Scott Pruitt has denied a report that he asked President Donald Trump to fire Attorney General Jeff Sessions and put Pruitt in charge of the Justice Department. But he told The Washington Post, which first uncovered the blog post a year ago, that he came to support Trump later in 2016, after Rubio exited the race, when Trump spoke at an event hosted by coal mining company Murray Energy Corp., one of his lobbying clients.

Widespread disgust for Pruitt "should serve as a blaring red siren for the Trump administration", Udall said. "I look forward to working with our next EPA Administrator to protect the environmental interests of our district, which is the proud home of the Adirondacks".

I want to stress - that list is hardly exhaustive. "I think he's a very smart and careful student of environmental law - there's no two ways about that".

Trump pointed out to reporters late Thursday that Wheeler had helped with his presidential campaign, though he incorrectly said that Wheeler backed Trump from early on. His most prominent former client, coal magnate Robert E. Murray, is an aggressive opponent of important air-pollution rules that the Obama EPA tried to impose and that Mr. Pruitt began the process of ripping up. Thanks so much to this community for caring about ethics and the environment and signaling to the Trump administration that you were paying attention to the shenanigans the White House tried to hide. Some of the ethics accusations involved jobs for Pruitt's wife. "Thank you again, Mr. President, for the honor of serving you and I wish you Godspeed in all that you put your hand to".

White House advisers promptly shot down Pruitt's proposal, it was reported.

He was also an aide to Sen.

Key presidential allies, like donor Harold Hamm, repeatedly told Trump that Pruitt was actually carrying out his agenda. Pruitt, the former Oklahoma state senator and attorney general, lasted a lot longer than seemed possible, given his reputation for liberal personal use of taxpayer funds and coziness with lobbyists.

An ethics cloud hung over Pruitt for months, as lawmakers from both parties, environmental groups and government watchdogs raised questions about his spending, housing arrangements, security team and raises for political appointees. "I believe you are serving as President today because of God's providence", Pruitt wrote in his resignation letter. "I pray as I have served you that I have blessed you and enabled you to effectively lead the American people". "I'm extremely disappointed. He's the only Cabinet secretary who has done what he was told to do".

Deason said that Pruitt's moves at EPA should have outweighed his ethical missteps, which he downplayed. "He is giving in to the loony left and is making a huge mistake".

And while he heralded Pruitt's resignation, he said it was "long overdue".

Pruitt, a Republican, had appeared Wednesday at a White House picnic for Independence Day, wearing a red-checked shirt and loafers with gold trim.
