LeBron James to join Los Angeles Lakers in $154m deal

LeBron James to join Los Angeles Lakers in $154m deal

The possibility of trading for Kawhi Leonard didn't go away with the signing of James.

Even Kobe Bryant, who spent his entire 20-year National Basketball Association career with the Lakers, saluted James.

James has led Eastern Conference teams to eight consecutive NBA Finals, with Cleveland's title in 2016 bringing the city its first major sports crown since football's Cleveland Browns in 1962, before the advent of the Super Bowl.

There's nothing worse than a bandwagon fan, and like Carr, I've been a Lakers fan since I could walk as an infant, and with LeBron now joining the team, there will be plenty of new Lakers fans strutting their colors.

Even as an iconic 10-story banner of James is about to be removed from a Cleveland building, the Lakers began filling out the roster for next season, agreeing to one-year deals with swingman Lance Stephenson, guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and center McGee. In his two decades playing for the Lakers, Bryant was the king of Los Angeles, but now, there's a new king in town.

The two first met in December, as James and the Cleveland Cavaliers grabbed a 121-112 victory over the young Lakers, as James sought Ball for an embrace.

As he had in the past, when he declared he was taking his talents to South Beach in 2010 and returning home in 2014, James took the wishes of his brood into account. He added that Northeast Ohio "will always be home".

James informed the Cavaliers on Friday that he would not exercise his $35.6 million contract option.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the six-time National Basketball Association champion who was part of the Lakers dynasty during the 1980s, hopes that James' arrival will signal a change in fortunes.

LeBron James #23 drives past Kawhi Leonard #2 of the San Antonio Spurs during the first half at Quicken Loans Arena on January 30, 2016 in Cleveland.

The most pressing question other than who will join LeBron James on the Lakers next season has been answered. And with the addition of James, the team may very well be back in championship contention.

As ESPN's Darren Rovell points out in a side-by-side comparison, Gilbert has indeed shown a change in maturity that perhaps has come as a result of winning a championship and having James back for a second act.
