Women march through Washington against Trump's immigration policy

An afternoon of protests ended in many arrests in the Hart Senate Office Building on Thursday as a group of mostly female protesters flooded the atrium of the work space to protest President Donald Trump's immigration policies.

Protesters loudly chanted "What do we want? Free families!" and "This is what democracy looks like" were among their cries.

Demonstrators from across the country descended on D.C. for the protest, first blocking the street in front of the Department of Justice, and then proceeding to the Hart building, where hundreds sat down in the lobby wrapped in foil blankets ― a reference to similar blankets given to migrant families held in federal detention centers.

"This is far beyond politics", she said. The idea that this president would pass a zero-tolerance, zero humanity policy and separate children from their parents, put these kids in cages, I think it's got everybody across the country outraged.

House Democrat Pramila Jayapal was among those arrested.

She said that the last two weeks have been really consumed by this issue.

In a written statement, the Capitol Police said around 575 people were charged with unlawfully demonstrating inside the office building.

"I'm proud to have been arrested with them", Jayapal said. So did the Democrats Kirsten Gillibrand of NY and Edward Markey of MA. According to U.S. Capitol Police, the individuals are being processed on the scene and released.

The Women's March demonstration is part of a wave of actions against Trump, whose administration began seeking in May to prosecute all adults who cross the border without authorization.

Trump's critics have blasted the executive order he signed allowing children to stay with their detained parents, saying incarceration of an entire family is also wrong.

Dozens of people shut down a government meeting in MI in protest of a contract with Immigration and Customs Enforcement to house detainees at a local jail. Eight people also were arrested outside an Ice building in Portland, Oregon, that has been closed because of a round-the-clock demonstration.
