76ers weighing trade packages for Kawhi Leonard

Speaking publicly last week for the first time since Kawhi Leonard requested a trade, San Antonio Spurs general manager R.C. Buford said the team's number one option was to keep the player and look to fix their relationship with him.

In order to attempt to sweeten any potential deal they make for Leonard, the Lakers are reportedly attempting to add another future 1st round pick and are willing to take on salary dumps to do so.

Lakers president Magic Johnson said earlier this week that if he can't deliver superstars via trades or the free agent market within two years, he will step down.

ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported on Thursday that Boston is one of the teams that have engaged in trade talks with the Spurs.

The Spurs are wary about sending Leonard to a potential rival superteam, preferring instead to keep him or trade him to the Eastern Conference, according to USA Today.

The Lakers have been weighing the conservation of young assets and future draft picks against the possibility of getting shut out in free agency.

Cleveland Cavaliers star James, meanwhile, has until today to decide whether to opt out of his contract and become a free agent.

According to multiple reports, Leonard could be traded sooner rather than later with multiple suitors in hand. L.A. should be able to offer incoming players plenty of minutes, especially if the front office moves young talent like Brandon Ingram, Kyle Kuzma and/or Josh Hart in a trade for Leonard.

The team might also might figure, quite reasonably, that Leonard would entice LeBron James. And while the Sixers have not made a formal offer to San Antonio at this time, Philadelphia has held serious internal discussions about acquiring Leonard over the last 48 hours.

That doesn't mean the rumor mill hasn't stopped churning, with much of the focus on how he might land with the Lakers. So many free agents will be forced to sign for less than they anticipated. Like Paul George, who the Sixers are reportedly also interested in pursuing (see story), it's not hard to imagine Leonard co-existing with Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid.
