Lakers Trade For Kawhi Could Clinch LeBron Signing

Lakers Trade For Kawhi Could Clinch LeBron Signing

The San Antonio Spurs are "fully engaged" in trade talks for All-Star small forward Kawhi Leonard, namely with the Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski. Should they miss on Leonard and George stay with the Thunder, it then becomes increasingly unlikely they land LeBron as well.

That doesn't mean the Spurs will just give Leonard away.

In the report, ESPN's Ramona Shelburne, Adrian Wojnarowski and Brian Windhorst detail that the Spurs are looking for a better package than the Cavaliers and Pacers got for Kyrie Irving and Paul George prior to free agency previous year. One team source says preliminary discussions with San Antonio revealed the Spurs have strong interest in a package involving burgeoning forwards Dario Saric and Robert Covington as well as a future first-round pick.

There have been mixed feelings across the Sixers fanbase with regard to who the Sixers should and shouldn't include in a Kawhi trade. The Celtics are reportedly unwilling to part with Jaylen Brown at the moment.

Insiders expect Gregg Popovich to trade Leonard to the team that offers the package they like most, even if it is the Los Angeles Lakers. Once draft picks are signed, they can not be traded for 30 days.

The Lakers want to trade for Leonard in the near future in the hopes that he could attract LeBron James to L.A. Leonard's suboptimal contract extension discussions with Jordan Brand in March signaled the importance of playing in a larger market, and the Spurs star would be open to playing in Boston and NY, the source said.

Kawhi Leonard #2 of the San Antonio Spurs drives to the basket as he gets past Brandon Ingram #14 of the Los Angeles Lakers in the second half of the game at Staples Center on February 26, 2017 in Los Angeles.
