Joe Jackson, father of Michael, dies aged 89

Joe Jackson, the patriarch of an American musical dynasty who started his son Michael, daughter Janet, and the Jackson 5 on the road to stardom but also verbally and physically abused them, has died at the age of 89, his family said on Wednesday.

According to U.S. media reports, the father of 11 lost his battle with pancreatic cancer at 3.30 am in Los Angeles.

Joe Jackson with Mike Tyson on the red carpet for the "Mike Tyson: Undisputed Truth-Live on Stage" grand opening show at the MGM Grand on the Las Vegas Strip. As Jermaine told The Daily Mail, certain family members were barred from visiting Joe when he was initially hospitalized.

Some online have criticized Joe Jackson for how he disciplined his 11 children with wife Katherine Jackson.

"Joe had been battling health problems for some time now". The family needs to be by his bedside - that's our only intention in his final days. As Michael became a breakout star and the rest of the Jackson 5 followed, Joe began managing the careers of their other siblings, including Randy, Rebbie, La Toya and Janet.

On Sunday, Jackson tweeted, "I have seen more sunsets than I have left to see".

Joe Jackson patriarch of the Jackson family music group is dead at 89.

Jackson reportedly carried on a decades long extra-marital affair with Cheryl Terrell, a secretary 20 years his junior. In the 2003 ITV documentary Living With Michael Jackson, the singer told interviewer Martin Bashir that his father would oversee the Jackson 5's intense rehearsals "with a belt in his hand" and "tear you up, really get you" if one of the brothers missed a step. "I love you grandpa", Randy Jr. said alongside an image of his grandfather. Jackson had a hard relationship with his troubled son.

Jackson's granddaughter, Paris, tweeted about the tweet from her official account.

"My mother nourished me with the most extravagant love imaginable", she said. "You gave us strength, you made us one of the most famous families in the world". The result was a string of huge hits including "I Want You Back", "ABC", "I'll Be There" and the Michael Jackson solo release "Ben". Offering prayers and condolences to theJackson family. They separated several times but never divorced. "It's hard raising nine kids, bringing them from IN out here.that was his whole thing, to wanting to keep his family together".

That all came to a head after a 1993 interview in which a visibly frightened Michael Jackson told Oprah Winfrey that he had lived in fear of his father for his entire life.
