Star Wars Spinoffs On Hold At Disney

Star Wars Spinoffs On Hold At Disney

The decision means that a rumored Obi-Wan movie, as well as a Boba Fett movie, may be on hold. Instead, the studio is focusing on completing Episode IX, which is set to begin filming sometime this summer, as well as the next trilogy of films being developed by The Last Jedi writer-director Rian Johnson.

Citing anonymous sources, Collider reported on Wednesday that Lucasfilm has halted development on the A Star Wars Story spinoff movies, including rumored Obi-Wan Kenobi and Boba Fett movies, as well as contracted sequels to Solo: A Star Wars Story, the latest entry in the series.

Solo wound up making just $84.4 million in the U.S. its first weekend and $339.6 million worldwide over the next four weeks - with experts predicting a $50-80 million loss for Disney when all is said and done. Although Solo was the most expensive Star Wars film ever made, analysts estimate that the movie will only earn around $400 million at the worldwide box office, potentially losing Disney and Lucasfilm more than $50 million.

Solo's USA box office takings stand at $196.2m (£148m) after three weeks on release.

The story also notes that Disney refused to give Solo any preferential treatment with regards to marketing, so the film wouldn't interfere with their plans for Avengers: Infinity War.

There are a number of factors in why Solo's performance was worse than expected, but one many have pointed to is the movie's release date. What? This is Star Wars we're talking about here. What those movies will entail is still up in the air but the going rumor is that they won't have anything to do with the Skywalker saga so them not getting paused makes sense. I think it's a combination of The Last Jedi splitting audience members, people having no interest in watching a Solo movie without Harrison Ford, and the behind-the-scenes drama with the firing of co-directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller.
