Kim Jong Un visits China to discuss next steps on nukes

Donald Trump first announced that he planned to suspend military exercises with South Korea during the nuclear summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Trump's decision to suspend the exercises, coupled with the vague joint statement issued after his summit with Kim, have reinforced fears in South Korea that the North is attempting to take advantage of a USA president who appears to care less about the traditional alliance than his predecessors.

Security was tight on Tuesday morning at the Beijing airport where paramilitary police prevented journalists from shooting photos.

North Korea agreed to denuclearization - something it had also committed to in talks with South Korea - while Mr Trump said the United States would end its joint military exercises with South Korea. Analysts said Beijing appeared to be trying to normalize such visits.

At Singapore summit, Kim Un Jong reaffirmed his commitment to the "complete denuclearization" of the Korean Peninsula in a joint statement with Trump.

The North Korean leader is expected to brief China's leadership on his talks with Mr Trump.

Despite reports of differences, China remains a close ally of North Korea.

While Washington has said repeatedly it wants Pyongyang to commit to the comprehensive, verified and irreversible disarmament of the peninsula, the joint declaration signed at the Trump-Kim summit did not include any timelines or specific targets.

Dozens of security vans, police cars and armoured vehicles lined streets around Beijing's Diaoyutai State Guesthouse - where Kim had stayed in his previous visit.

Kim "felt thanks for and highly praised China's promotion of denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula and its important role in protecting the peninsula's peace and stability", state-run CCTV said.

The U.S. and South Korea regularly have held major joint exercises with South Korea.

Park Ihn-hwi, an global studies professor at Ewha Womans University in Seoul, said, however, that North Korea would want economic incentives before committing to complete denuclearisation.

Or maybe China has its own reasons for making Kim's presence in Beijing known immediately.

A stretch limousine similar to one North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has used previously, arrives in Beijing.

Even if Kim hears "no" for the time being, it's not going to be too hard for North Korea to play China and the USA against each other in the future.

China has long pushed for a suspension under its "dual suspension" proposal, whereby North Korea stops weapons tests and the United States and South Korea stop military drills.

North Korea proposed to Seoul to disarm, on a trial basis, the Joint Security Area in Panmunjom, the only site in the DMZ where both countries' soldiers stand nearly face to face, the South's presidential spokesman said on Friday. However, Trump just imposed 25% tariffs on $50 billion in Chinese goods and is proposing 10% tariffs on $200 billion more.

In reply, the US president broached his plans to end the joint military exercises at a news conference after the summit, saying it was not appropriate to negotiate while staging "war games".

"The United States is in a position to keep its commitment to its allied nations' defense and our understanding is there is no change to the U.S. commitment to the Japan-U.S. alliance and the structure of American troops stationed in Japan", Suga told a regular briefing.
