Immigration advocates rally against child-parent separation at border

WASHINGTON-President Donald Trump said Friday he wouldn't sign a compromise immigration bill backed by House Speaker Paul Ryan (R., Wis.), days after House Republicans said their effort had the backing of the White House. Almost 2,000 immigrant children were separated from parents over a period of about six weeks in April and May, according to the Department of Homeland Security. Among them, family-related visas for the married children or adult siblings of USA citizens as well as the 55,000 visas now available under the diversity lottery system for immigrants from other represented countries, including many in Africa.

With the crackdown in full swing, the detained parents are "in jail settings", a DHS official said, awaiting adjudication and possible prosecution for crossing the border.

Jentezen Franklin, a member of Trump's evangelical council, told CNN, "It's a very risky route to go when you begin to take selections of scriptures and say, 'The Bible was written to justify political standings. That's their law", he said, provoking an uproar from reporters.

"The President fully supports both the Goodlatte bill and the House leadership bill", said White House spokesman Raj Shah, adding that Trump would sign "either the Goodlatte or the leadership bills". "I certainly wouldn't sign the more", he replied, being cut off by the anchor, but mimicking his description of the compromise measure. Trump said zero football players have reached out to him and questioned their stance against social injustice.

In a political maneuver one commentator described as a "monstrous" attempt to "use functionally kidnapped children as literal hostages" to advance an extremist anti-immigrant agenda, House Republicans are circulating a legislative plan that would limit the Trump administration's family separation policy while simultaneously ramming through cuts to legal immigration and billions in border wall funding.

Trump continued to falsely assert Friday that separating migrant families was a law spearheaded by Democrats. On Friday, President Trump joined the critics, with a familiar caveat.

President Donald Trump says he won't sign a "moderate" immigration bill written by House Republicans.

A draft of a Republican bill in the House presented to lawmakers on Thursday proposes a solution to the situation by allowing children to be kept in detention with their parents - overturning the 1997 Flores agreement that prevents illegal immigrant children from being held in custody for long periods.

"Democrats can fix their forced family breakup at the Border by working with Republicans on new legislation, for a change!"

Democrats fired back, with top House Democrat Nancy Pelosi calling the Republican proposal "simply unworthy of America".

"The compromise bill would halt the separation of immigrant families" says another Bloomberg article. Evangelist and staunch Trump supporter Franklin Graham has also called family separation "disgraceful".

President Trump called out NFL players who "take a knee" during the national anthem Friday, saying their protests "aren't a real issue" and asking them to submit names for his team to review for pardons.

Miller proved himself even more instrumental in Trump's decision to enforce the "zero tolerance policy" when border-crossing numbers hit highs in April.
