Triple Crown victor Justify is a horse with a Canadian connection

The way things went this year, don't be surprised to see Smith riding a good one in next year's Triple Crown races.

Though their running styles and strides are different, Baffert said there is only one thing that matters at the end of the day: they're fast.

"He just came on there, and he broke every curse there was", he said.

"He's just one of those all-time great horses", said Baffert, who won the Triple Crown three years ago with American Pharoah.

Justify, who is 6-0 and is the first horse to sweep the series without racing at age 2, beat nine others to win - more competition than any other Triple Crown victor has beaten in the Belmont.

Hot on the heels of his wins in the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes, the unbeaten Bob Baffert-trained three-year-old passed the so-called "Test of the Champion" in the mile-and-a-half Belmont with flying colours.

Baffert's tied Sunny Jim Fitzsimmons as the only trainer to saddle two Triple Crown winners. This means that Sir Barton (1919), Gallant Fox (1930) and Omaha (1935) were all retroactively added to the list. If he pulls it off, he'll become the 13th thoroughbred in history to do so and only the second since 1978 when American Pharoah took the title in 2015. "It was certainly the most thrilling race I've been involved in and the most excited I've been watching a race", Rags to Riches' trainer Todd Pletcher said to the New York Racing Association, per The Morning Call.

Bob Baffert, who trained American Pharoah, also is the trainer of Justify. At 52, he is the oldest jockey to win the Triple Crown. In the wake of his Belmont triumph on Saturday, they said they were open to the idea of keeping him on the racetrack but wanted to be absolutely sure he was healthy after a whirlwind schedule in which he raced and won six times, beginning in mid-February. "He's so gifted. He's sent from heaven".

"I just couldn't keep it inside of me", Smith told CBN News. I can't describe the emotions going through my body right now.

The contender that gave Justify a challenge down the stretch is 13/2 to win the Belmont Stakes.

Justify carried that swagger through the 1½-mile race, starting from the rail and jumping to an early lead. But if Baffert prefers to keep the horse out West, the Pacific Classic on August 18 at Del Mar might be an appealing target.

Justify defied the hard post position along the rail, breaking well and taking the lead within seconds.

Baffert will saddle a second horse: 30-1 shot Restoring Hope.

Smith got the big colt into a relaxed rhythm under a moderate pace heading into the backstretch, and he had an easy trip from there.

Gronkowski took second place and Hofburg placed in third. Others have moved too late and let the leaders get away.

"I think it was just a special case", he said. They were going slow and he said [jockey Irad Ortiz Jr.] didn't want to make some insane move down the backside to go join him, which probably wouldn't have made any sense.
