Leaders tweet own angles on 'spontaneous' G7 moment

German Chancellor Angela Merkel shared a photo on her official Instagram account Saturday from the Group of Seven (G-7) summit, surrounded by other world leaders... and in mid-stare-down with President Trump.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Sunday (10 June) she was more open to French President Emmanuel Macron's plans to reform migration and defence policy in Europe than his hopes to bolster the euro.

Trump cited unfair trade and tariffs from Canada, a longtime USA ally, as one of the reasons he refused to back the joint statement.

Earlier in the day, the U.S. leader tweeted that he had instructed his representatives not to sign the statement, hours after the summit's host, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, announced all countries had supported it. While Merkel, in the picture, can be seen standing behind a table with both hands pressed firmly into its surface atop some documents, Trump with his arms crossed stares back.

The summit did not mark the end of the transatlantic partnership between Europe and the U.S., Merkel said.

Trump also incorrectly claimed that the photo was released by the U.S. team.

"We discussed all outstanding issues and made substantial progress, exchanging papers and talking throughout the night", a French official said.

Trump said that his ultimate goal was the elimination of all trade duties.

On Saturday Trump called Trudeau "very dishonest and weak" in a tweet after Trudeau repeated criticisms of United States tariffs on imported steel and aluminium and Trump's trade policies in a news conference following the Group of Seven meeting in Quebec.

Trump made promoting American interests in global trade his primary goal for the G7 summit, often to the detriment of diplomatic niceties. Echoing a series of comments she's made about the erosion of US-European ties, Merkel expressed consternation about Trump's disavowal of the G-7's joint closing statement.

The Charlevoix G-7 summit was marked by sharp disagreements over Trump's decision to impose higher import taxes on aluminum and steel imports.

Merkel sidestepped giving a clear answer when asked if Berlin will stop viewing Washington as an "important partner", saying that she would continue efforts to achieve compromises through dialogue and "go her own way" if those discussions fail to bring any results.

Trump, who is in Singapore for negotiations with North Korea, continued to rip into United States trading partners late Sunday night Eastern Time, repeating complaints about the U.S. trade deficit and contributions to NATO.
