New indictment filed against Paul Manafort

New indictment filed against Paul Manafort

Special counsel Robert Mueller indicted Konstantin Kilimnik, a Russian-Ukrainian political consultant with ties to Paul Manafort, on counts of conspiracy to obstruct justice and obstruction of justice Friday.

According to Mueller's filing this week, Manafort's alleged attempts to tamper with witness testimony took place over several days in February, after Gates' cooperation deal was announced. He remains charged with money laundering, illegal foreign lobbying and lying to federal officials.

This time, Donald Trump's former campaign chairman is accused of obstruction of justice and conspiracy to obstruct justice for his attempts to tamper with witnesses.

The charge accuses Manafort of violating the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) by failing to register as a foreign agent acting on behalf of the Ukrainian government and allegedly misleading USA authorities about his ties to the country.

In the late Friday filing, Manafort's lawyers said the special counsel's allegations of witness tampering "conjures a sinister plot" to persuade associates to perjure themselves, but disputes that the evidence provided establishes any tampering.

Mueller's accusations centered on work that Manafort arranged a half-decade ago to promote Viktor Yanukovych, a pro-Russian politician who was then Ukraine's president.

Paul Manafort, President Donald Trump's former campaign chairman, leaves the federal courthouse in Washington. They said nothing governing the terms of their client's pretrial release prevents him from having contact with anyone, that the encrypted-messaging apps Manafort used are commonplace and that he didn't ask anyone to produce a false affidavit or false testimony at trial. He has pleaded not guilty.

"Mr. Manafort is innocent and nothing about this latest allegation changes our defense", Manafort spokesperson Jason Maloni told ABC News in a statement on Tuesday. Among the alleged texts Mueller highlighted was one in which Kilimnik told one associate that Manafort wanted to "give him a quick summary that he says to everybody (which is true) that our friends never lobbied in the United States, and the goal of the program was European Union".

Investigators claimed that the "repeated" contacts occurred while Manafort was under house arrest, as a condition of his release pending the trials in Washington and Virginia. "Indeed, previously", Manafort said.

Manafort's spokesman Jason Maloni said on Friday he was reviewing the new charges. For Manafort, the charges came just before his attorneys argued that he should be allowed to be freed from home confinement on bond pending his trial, scheduled for next month in Alexandria, Va.

"They haven't been convicted of anything", Trump said, telling the media that he hasn't given any thought to the notion.

In the case of the former Mr. Manafort reached out to suggest they talk about details of matters under investigation.
