Every 40 seconds, someone in the world dies by suicide. "I know those feel like harsh questions, but that's the real question that needs to be asked and answered", said Enos about the questions you need to ask.

Suicide rates across the country have risen 30 percent over the last two decades, according to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report.

There have been countless articles about the need to break the silence around the topic of mental health and suicide, and I am encouraged by the support people are extending to others.

"It's very important to talk about it so that people know that there are options and there's hope and that suicide is not the only way out", said Jones.

"That can be a silver lining to a tragedy happening", he said.

The announcement comes not only in the wake of the troubling CDC report, but the recent high-profile suicides of fashion maven Kate Spade and celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain.

The CDC urges potential suicides to call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline 1-800-273-8255.

The CDC said many people associate mental-health conditions with suicide, but it's rare for a single factor to lead someone to take their own life.

Despite the steadiness of the suicide rate in the state, Allen says there is a lot of work to do.

Such groups as Teen Lifeline in Phoenix run call centers devoted to helping younger generations navigate the ups and downs of adolescence and young adulthood. Their deaths underscored dire news from the Centers for Disease Control about a steep increase in suicides in the U.S. over the past two decades.

Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the U.S. But the signs aren't always clear. Ms. Spade and Mr. Bourdain are now among the approximately 45,000 suicides each year in the United States. There have been 15 so far this year.

Scientists are making progress in identifying ways of predicting suicide risk more precisely, including biomarkers that could indicate whether someone is more likely to attempt it, said Jane Pearson, chairwoman of the National Institute of Mental Health's suicide research consortium.

"Then you say, 'Have you thought about harming yourself?" Her husband said in a statement on Wednesday that she had suffered from depression and anxiety for many years.
