U.S. special forces soldier killed, 4 wounded in Somalia attack

Al Shabaab has claimed responsibility for an attack in which a US commando was killed and four others were wounded when they came under fire in the country. Afterward, Africa Command revisited the protection that USA troops in Africa on operations.

A USA military official confirmed the attack in the country's south, about 50 kilometers (32 miles) north of the port city of Kismayo, killed one us troop and wounded four others.

One of the wounded U.S. service members got medical care in the field and the other three were medically evacuated for additional treatment.

Earlier this month, al-Shabab claimed a series of attacks across the country, according to the SITE Intelligence group.

The U.S. special operations forces were fighting alongside about 800 troops from the Somali National Security Forces and Kenyan Defence Forces when they were attacked late on Friday by mortars and small arms fire. That was believed to be the first death of a United States troop in Somalia since the infamous 1993 Black Hawk Down disaster. A U.S. Africa Command statement said the four were in the care of the U.S. Embassy medical team in neighboring Kenya.

President Donald Trump called the soldiers heroes Friday night. Al-Shabab has been blamed for the October truck bombing in Mogadishu that killed more than 500 people.

"My thoughts and prayers are with the families of our serviceman who was killed and his fellow servicemen who were wounded in Somolia (sic)", he tweeted.

The group used to control most parts of the country, but since 2010, its fighters have been removed from most major towns and cities. He was the first US casualty in Somalia since the Black Hawk Down incident in 1993.

"The mission's objectives were to clear al-Shabab from contested areas, liberate villages from al-Shabab control, and establish a permanent combat outpost created to increase the span of Federal Government of Somalia security and governance", AFRICOM said.

CBN News learned it happened Friday during an operation in Jubaland, Somalia.

The October attack in Niger raised questions in Washington about the us military presence across Africa as the Trump administration focuses counterterror efforts on a range of groups linked to Al Qaeda and the Islamic State group.

The U.S. forces were accompanying Somali and other African forces at the time, helping to set up an outpost to clear the area of al-Shabab fighters. A Pentagon investigation of the incident produced a highly critical report.
