Trump backs out of fragile joint communique, blames Trudeau

Trump met with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Friday evening during the G-7 summit in La Malbaie, Quebec.

Morneau said he is engaged in intense talks with his USA counterparts in the hopes of finding a way forward.

Mr Trump is expected to leave the summit early and travel to Singapore ahead of a meeting there with the North Korean leader Kim Jong-un on Tuesday.

US President Donald Trump told Group of Seven leaders that the United States wanted a quick end to trade practices that he says have led to an exodus of American companies and jobs to other countries.

Canadian officials said on Friday that talks had been "cordial" throughout the day, and that a constructive discussion had taken place in a private meeting between Trump and Trudeau.

Mr Trump's imposition of tariffs on steel and aluminium imports has sparked anger, with even United States allies falling subject to them.

At what a French described as one "extraordinary" session, leaders who had vowed to confront Trump over his decision to impose tariffs on USA allies last week as part of his "America First" agenda, showered Trump with data one after the other.

"Why are we having a meeting without Russian Federation in the meeting?"

Trump, who argues his tariffs are meant to protect USA industry and workers from unfair worldwide competition, told reporters he had suggested to the other G7 leaders that all trade barriers, including tariffs and subsidies, be eliminated.

Other G7 leaders, including British Prime Minister Theresa May and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, have also spoken out against the US tariffs. Trump aims to renegotiate trade deals so that tariffs are reciprocal.

The group of industrialized democracies - the U.S., France, Canada, Italy, Japan, Germany and the United Kingdom - traditionally issues a joint communique at the conclusion of their annual summit.

"The relationships were outstanding, but because of the fact that USA leaders of the past didn't do a good job on trade-and, again, I'm not blaming countries, I'm blaming our people that represented our past-it's gonna change", Trump said.

President Donald Trump is defending his decision to constantly bash the press - both at home and on foreign soil - as he participates in his first solo news conference in more than a year.

"We have a tremendous trade imbalance", Trump said during Saturday's press conference.

President Donald Trump says the US will either do a three-way free trade deal with Mexico or Canada or direct deals and says there will be a "sunset clause" that will allow for the deal or deals to be reopened at a later date. Trump also said at the time that he was undecided about the climate change agreement.

"We're either going to have NAFTA in a better negotiated form or we're going to have two deals", the USA president said.

On Wednesday, the European Union announced $3 billion worth of tariffs on USA products in retaliation would go into effect next month.

The President warned Canada and Europe to back off their threats to hit back with retaliatory trade measures on July 1 if the US does not lift the steel and aluminum levies.

Asked whether she was concerned the President could pull out of the trip if a trade war with the European Union escalates, Mrs May said Mr Trump had said was looking forward to the trip.
