Val Kilmer Returns as Iceman for TOP GUN: MAVERICK

Val Kilmer has been confirmed to be reprising his role as Tom "Iceman" Kazansky in Top Gun 2. Production on the long-in-the-works follow-up began last week, and Tom Cruise is back again in the lead role.

THR's story reiterated Cruise's revelation from just over a year ago that the sequel's official title is Top Gun: Maverick instead of Top Gun 2.

Nobody outside of the production - let alone the writing process - even knows if Cruise's Maverick or Kilmer's Iceman will utter any of their famous phrases, like "I feel the need for speed" and "I don't like you because you're unsafe".

"Kilmer will join Cruise in the long-awaited sequel to Tony Scott's 1986 action blockbuster, in which Cruise's aviator Pete "Maverick" Mitchell is now a mentor to a new generation of U.S. Navy fighter pilots". It also starred Kelly McGillis, Anthony Edwards, and Tom Skerritt in pivotal roles. The sequel will reportedly find the fighter pilots feeling ineffectual as drone strikes are making their skills irrelevant in modern war. The sequel, which is being produced by leading man Cruise and Jerry Bruckheimer, is expected to reach movie theatres next summer.

Kilmer was previously rumored to be joining the cast with a Facebook post writing, "not often you get to say "yes" without reading the script".

Production has kicked off, as Tom Cruise has given fans a look at the first image from the movie. The much awaited film is slated to hit the screens on July 12, 2019.
