Trudeau expects 'difficult' conversations with Trump at G7

French President Emmanuel Macron, who has invested in a warm personal relationship with Trump, said the other G7 nations - Britain, Canada, Germany, Italy and Japan, as well as France - should remain "polite" and productive but warned that "no leader is forever", a sign that Europe would not surrender meekly to the United States president.

Late Thursday, Trump tweeted an apparent reply.

These summits are usually seen as a cheerful and informal demonstration of shared objective and responsibility among the world's richest economies.

They also said they expected Trump to come under increasing pressure at home to reverse the tariffs, which they said would hurt USA interests.

The Trump administration at one point granted Canada and Mexico a last-minute reprieve from tariffs in March as negotiations to rework the North American Free Trade Agreement, known as NAFTA, continued.

"Because these six countries represent values, they represent an economic market which has the weight of history behind it and which is now a true global force". Trump is unlikely to back away from the nationalistic policies that have frustrated and unnerved allies but which he sees as key promises to his most loyal voters.

The Canadian official said Trudeau remained optimistic that the summit could help find common solutions to issues such as growth and environmental protection.

But the French leader quickly added that Trump can't undo all the good work that has been done on pushing Iran to abandon its pursuit of nuclear weapons.

Throughout the escalation in rhetoric, Trudeau slammed Trump's tariffs in several media appearances, calling the decision "totally unacceptable" and "insulting".

The two leaders have a blunt message for Trump.

Mr. Trudeau, who is playing summit host, said Mr. Trump, who is known to dislike criticism, is still planning to attend the two-day summit of leaders of Canada, France, Great Britain, Germany, Italy and Japan, "according to his tweet this morning".

Abe, who was in Washington ahead of the United States president's historic summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un next week, has more at stake than tariffs. The EU trade surplus with the United States is $151bn, and Canada keeps a farmers and others out. "Within the worldwide framework, we have to take measures and that's what Canada has done and what the European Union has also announced".

Asked about Trump's remark that the Canadians burned down the White House, aides to the President and to Canada's Trudeau declined to comment.

"This upcoming summit won't be an easy one, and the leadership of the Canadian government is very much counted upon", Kimihiro Ishikane, Japan's ambassador to Canada, said in an interview.
