French Open quarter-final

"Me and my brother are guys that spend three, four hours a day in the gym, lifting heavy weights, on the treadmill".

Zverev had survived successive five-setters in the previous two rounds, including saving a match point against Damir Dzumhur in the last 32, but his tired legs and blistered feet again worked overtime to carry him over the finishing line against Russian Khachanov at Court Suzanne Lenglen.

Zverev refused to blame his injury on the near 11 hours he had spent on court in his last three rounds against Dusan Lajovic, Damir Dzumhur and Karen Khachanov, each of whom he had beaten after trailing by two sets to one.

While fatigue may come into play, Zverev has alleviated concerns over his fitness, saying he is mentally strong to rally on in the ongoing tournament.

The big-hitting American secured victory on her first match point with a powerful serve that clipped Putintseva's racket and flew into the crowd. "You just have to fight for every point".

Zverev did not waiver in the fifth set either, taking control with an early break and wrapping up the match on Khachanov's serve several games later before falling to his knees in celebration. "I'm very happy about being in the quarterfinals here, going the hard way, going the long distance ... showing everybody that I can play for as long as I need to".

Thiem also took revenge on his German opponent following his loss in last month's ATP Madrid Masters final.

"But I hope I can win more matches here". He took huge cuts at the ball, some came off and some did not as he piled up a total of 42 errors for only 19 winners.

U.S. Open runner-up Madison Keys advanced to the last eight without dropping a set, defeating Romania's Mihaela Buzarnescu 6-1 6-4.

She clinched the victory on her first match point with a forehand victor from the baseline.

The second-set tiebreaker was scrappy, Zverev clinching it with an ace to level the match.

Kazakhstan's Yulia Putintseva celebrates winning her fourth round match of the French Open against Barbora Strycova of Czech Republic in two sets 6-2, 6-0.

It was a disappointing end to Zverev's tournament, but at least he leaves Paris having got rid of a couple of statistics that were hanging over his head.

Stephens, the 10th seed, had previously made the fourth round for four successive seasons and will next play either Australian Open champion and second seed Caroline Wozniacki or Russia's Daria Kasatkina.

Zverev said: "I'm not concerned". The Italian has never won a match in a Grand Slam but now the clay court specialist finds himself in his first career Slam quarter after stunning David Goffin 7-5, 4-6, 6-0, 6-3. Elsewhere, Thiem bested Kei Nishikori 6-2, 6-0, 5-7, 6-4 in their fourth-round duel.

Pavic and Dabrowski will face Demi Schuurs and Matwe Middelkoop of the Netherlands in Monday's quarter-finals.

At least Thiem can take heart from fellow countryman and former world number one Thomas Muster who won the French Open in 1995 playing in his 28th major.

"The first two sets were unbelievable but then he (Nishikori) raised his levels", Thiem said.
