Sharapova, Muguruza book place in French Open last 16

Sharapova, Muguruza book place in French Open last 16

Serena Williams announced her shock withdrawal from the French Open with injury on Monday just minutes before her scheduled fourth-round clash against long-time bitter rival and fellow Grand Slam icon Maria Sharapova.

Serena Williams of the US (L) and Russia's Maria Sharapova shake hands after Williams won their quarter-final match at the Australian Open tennis tournament at Melbourne Park, Australia, January 26, 2016.

While Sharapova displayed some of her best tennis on Saturday, Serena is still making a comeback after taking a one-year break from the game to give birth to her daughter Alexis Olympia.

"I unfortunately have been having some issues with my pec, my pec muscle, and (it) has unfortunately been getting worse to the point where right now I can't actually serve". I thought it was a ideal opportunity to see how I was. "So it's just, like, I think it would be more shocking if I wasn't in tears", she said.

She stunned the world in 2004, when, as a 17-year-old kid, she defeated the favourite Serena Williams for the Wimbledon crown, and rocketed to superstardom.

The two-time Paris champion, seeded 28, dropped just three games as she knocked out sixth seeded Czech Karolina Pliskova. Because of the withdrawal, this does not count as a victory for Sharapova, who will play 2016 French Open champion Garbine Muguruza on Wednesday.

"I have given up so much to be here".

"It's really hard to be in this situation, but. for now in my life, I just always try to think positively and just think of the bigger picture and hopefully (I can play in) the next events and the rest of the year".

"So I'm going to get an MRI tomorrow".

"And I had such a wonderful performance in my first Grand Slam back".

"It was not that easy, she is a tough opponent", said Halep, who is chasing her maiden Grand Slam title.

"I was looking forward to my match against Serena today and am disappointed that she had to withdraw", the 28th seed said. Serena has won the last 18 matches between the two. "But this is a little different and I'm clueless as to what to do", she said.

"I'm going to stay here and see some of the doctors here, see as many specialists as I can".
