Kilauea Volcano: Aerial Images of Lava Destroying Homes

Officials warned on Tuesday that a large plume of laze, a toxic lava haze composed of hydrochloric acid and tiny shards of volcanic glass, was blowing inland along the coastline, released with the ongoing inundation of Kapoho Bay. The USGS reported that lava had inundated most of the nearby Kapoho Beach Lots and Vacationland subdivisions.

A color infrared satellite image shows lava from the Kilauea volcano eruption encroaching a residential area in Kapoho Bay, Hawaii, on Monday.

According to Snyder, a number of drone operators have been cited for violating the temporary flight restriction area over lava flows.

Officials warned residents about the presence of laze, a potentially unsafe mix of hydrochloric acid, steam and tiny glass particles in the air.

A wide, slow-moving river of lava from the Kilauea volcano has claimed hundreds of additional homes in the southeastern corner of Hawaii's Big Island, officials say, marking what could be the most destructive day of the now monthlong volcanic eruption.

So far, it was unclear how many homes have been affected, but Hawaii Civil Defense Administrator Talmadge Magno said it was fair to say it was hundreds. Okabe described the area as a mix of vacation rentals and year-round residences.

"Harry had a premonition this was going to happen", Snyder said. She said it would be some time before precise losses were confirmed.

"The most recent aerial surveillance appears to show that Mayor Kim's house in lower Puna was destroyed sometime today by the lava flow", said David Mace, spokesman for the Federal Emergency Management.

Continued earthquakes, including Sunday's magnitude 5.5 quake, damaged the overlook deck and other features at Jagger Museum in the national park, where most visitors go to see the summit lava lake, park spokeswoman Jessica Ferracane said.

Lava had covered almost 8 square miles (20.7 sq km) of landscape as of Monday, and some 9,900 earthquakes had been recorded on the Big Island since Kilauea rumbled back to life last month. "If lava takes it, we're covered".
