If you're an Apple Watch fan, the company has some good news for you now.

Only the Apple Watch Series 1 and above will be able to download the next-gen software when it's released later in 2018.

Apple now offers plenty of new Apple Watches to choose from, although no new hardware refresh was announced during the WWDC opening keynote.

Apple will be releasing watchOS 5 this fall as a free update, but you'll need at least the Apple Watch Series 1 model to get it.

Apple is also adding new workout types for yoga and hiking, along with cadence tracking and rolling mile pace for runners. A new feature for developers allows music, audiobooks and meditation sessions from apps such as Pandora, Audible and 10% Happier to be synced to Apple Watch for playback offline without the user's iPhone nearby.

Upon opening the app for the first time, users will be able to choose which friends they want to be able to communicate with. The feature uses Wi-Fi or cellular connectivity to enable voice communication with any Apple Watch user available around the globe. Well, the original Apple Watch to be more precise. Competitions will allow Apple Watch owners to challenge their activity sharing friends to 7-day competitions, based upon their fitness data. watchOS 5 also brings the Apple Podcasts app to the wrist.

Apple is also making it easier to talk to your Apple Watch. Student ID Cards With watchOS 5, Apple Watch replaces Student ID cards.

It's not hard to imagine all kinds of handy use cases for the feature, which feels much less awkward and cringey than trying to make an actual phone call from your wrist.

Lastly, Apple announced a new Pride band and matching watch face, both of which are available today.
