Texas boy spells 'koinonia' correctly, wins Scripps National Spelling Bee

Two 12-year-old girls, one from Cherry Hill and the other from Aston, reached the finals but fell short of the top spot Thursday night at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Maryland.

Karthik won by correctly spelling the word: "koinonia".

Through RSVBee, spellers could qualify for the National Bee if did not win their state or regional bees but either won their school bee or had previously competed on the national stage. The hundreds of precocious spellers, ranging in age from 8 to 15, stepped out from all 50 states. "That's one speller I know who's better than I am".

"I had confidence, but I didn't think it would really happen", the Dallas News quoted Nemmani as saying.

Sometime after 8:30 Thursday evening, one of 16 youthful spelling aficionados will win the Scripps National Spelling Bee along with $40,000, a trophy, and trips to NY and Hollywood to appear on popular television shows.

Scripps' Spelling Bee additionally offers an interactive way to seemingly view the competition outside of ESPN.

Of the past 23 champions, 19 have had Indian heritage.

Karthik, for his part, took no pleasure in vanquishing a familiar foe.

Out of 516 spellers on Tuesday, 454 spelled correctly and advanced to the third round Wednesday.

Delmarva had two local spellers make it as far as round three: Ava Camille Bautista from Wicomico Middle School and James Gordy from Somerset Intermediate School. "I wouldn't say I expected it".

A second New Jersey student, Navneeth Murali of Edison, made it to the finals and landed in fifth place after misspelling the word "gelinotte", which is a European woodland grouse.
