Nuclear deal may take more than 1 meeting with Kim Jong Un

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and North Korea's former military intelligence chief opened high-stakes talks in NY on Thursday (Friday NZ Time) to try to salvage an on-again, off-again summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

President Donald Trump on Friday suggested that his summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore may occur after all.

"As we move to adjust to the political situation in the face of U.S. hegemonism, I am willing to exchange detailed and in-depth opinions with your leadership and hope to do so moving forward", Mr Kim told Mr Lavrov.

U.S. President Donald Trump is set to receive a personal letter Friday from North Korean leader Kim Jong Un ahead of preparations for a potential summit later this month between the two men.

Trump hopes to meet Kim in Singapore on June 12 and pressure him to give up his nuclear weapons, although he conceded on Thursday that might require more rounds of direct negotiations.

"I look forward to the day I can take the sanctions off North Korea", Trump said.

Pompeo spoke to reporters at a news conference in NY after meeting Thursday with former North Korean military intelligence chief Kim Yong Chol.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met Kim's right-hand man, General Kim Yong Chol, in NY late on May 30 to discuss the matter.

They continued to speak and posed for photos before Kim got into a black SUV and departed.

Trump then called the bluff by canceling the summit himself in a letter to Kim, to which North Korea responded with conciliatory statements, saying it would meet the U.S. any time.

"The difference of the position between the North and the USA in the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula is still huge", South Korea's unification minister, Cho Myoung-gyon, said on Wednesday, as NK News noted.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is assisted by his sister Kim Yo Jong as he signs documents at the truce village of Panmunjom inside the demilitarized zone separating the two Koreas, South Korea, April 27, 2018. He was scheduled to depart the White House on Friday afternoon to spend the weekend at Camp David, where is scheduled to participate in North Korea briefings, aides said. Trump's letter, the aides said, was created to pressure the North on the global stage for appearing to have cold feet. It was not clear whether the United States president would receive Kim Jong-un's envoy in the Oval Office.

Yet he also said at his news conference that hard work remains including hurdles that may appear to be insurmountable as negotiations progress on the USA demand for North Korea's complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization. "I told them today, take your time, we can go fast or we can go slowly".

He said that the meeting could bring an end to the conflict between North and South Korea. The last official of his stature to visit the United States was Jo Myong Rok, the late first vice chairman of the National Defense Commission, who visited Washington in 2000, South Korea's Unification Ministry said.

He had been personally sanctioned by the United States over his role in the North's nuclear weapons program and is thought to have masterminded an attack that sank a South Korean naval vessel in 2010, killing 46 sailors.

The specifics of the meeting have been withheld, but White House officials have noted denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula as the main focus of the meeting.
