Donald Trump waits on Kim Jong-un letter, talks up possible meeting

President Donald Trump said Friday that his summit with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un is back on for next month in Singapore, telling reporters that "the relationships are building - and that's very positive". The media said you had a meeting and cancelled it.

Kim Yong Chol - the most senior official from Pyongyang to visit the United States in 18 years - is expected to head to Washington to present an eagerly expectant Trump with a letter from his young leader.

"It went very well", Trump told reporters.

The letter from Kim Jong Un had to first be inspected by U.S. officials before it was delivered to the president, a White House official confirmed.

Despite Lavrov's invitation to Kim, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Thursday that it's "too early to speculate" about a Putin-Kim summit.

North Korea's flurry of diplomatic activity following an increase in nuclear weapons and missile tests in 2017 suggests that Kim is eager for sanctions relief to build his economy and for the global legitimacy a summit with Trump would provide.

United States officials learned of the letter's substance through diplomatic channels in the absence of reading the letter itself, the person said.

The sides agreed to invigorate high-level visits, exchange and cooperation in different fields and hold a meeting between the top leaders of the DPRK and Russian Federation this year marking the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, KCNA said.

The Russian FM and North Korea's leader pledged to do their utmost to secure peace talks to ease the Korean knot. "Remember what I say, we will see what we will see".

"Frankly, I said, 'Take your time, '" Trump said.

Trump said he was hopeful his summit with Kim would take place on June 12 as originally scheduled but left open the possibility talks would fall through.

Former U.S. officials who have negotiated with North Korea have cautioned that the Kim family regime has violated past deals aimed at curbing the nation's nuclear and ballistic missile programs.

He was greeted at the White House by chief of staff John Kelly and then whisked into the Oval Office. "North Korea has to demonstrate they supported US-NK talks on their own free will, not because they felt frightened or they were greedy".

"We welcome the contacts that have been developing in the recent months between North and South Korea, between North Korea and the United States", Lavrov said in comments to the media.

The decision to hold the diplomatic meeting in Singapore comes roughly a week after Trump called the summit off in a threatening letter.

Far from being hustled in through the back door of the White House, Kim was welcomed at the south lawn entrance in front of massed ranks of cameras and escorted to the Oval Office, where the secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, was waiting with Trump.
