North Korea keeps its promise to destroy its nuclear test site

Trump reacted by criticizing his predecessors for allowing this perceived threat to develop; aiming tough (and at times insulting) talk at North Korea's young leader, Kim Jong Un, while also expressing a willingness to meet with him directly; and organizing a successful push for United Nations-backed sanctions created to bring North Korea either to the negotiating table or to its knees. Beijing had backed the summit and was possibly taken unawares with the cancellation following heated exchanges between Washington and Pyongyang this week.

"Trump said in his press briefing the summit could still happen".

That statement referred to U.S. vice president Mike Pence as a "political dummy" for his comments on the North and said it was up to the Americans whether they would "meet us at a meeting room or encounter us at nuclear-to-nuclear showdown".

However, Trump said he had spoken to South Korea and Japan and they were ready "if foolish or reckless acts are taken by North Korea" and willing to shoulder the financial cost of any U.S. military operations.

"Under the current circumstances we hope both the DPRK and the USA can cherish the recent positive progress, stay patient, show goodwill, move in the same direction and continue to stay committed to promoting the denuclearisation of the peninsula", he added.

Cheshire said: "If you think back to a year ago, when he was a pariah, well, he's had all these meetings where he has become more of an global (figure) than a despot back home, especially that historic meeting in the Demilitarised Zone between North and South Korea".

Trump's letter was released publicly within hours of Western journalists confirming they had witnessed the demolition of North Korea's remote nuclear test site at Punggye-Ri.

Japan, a staunch US ally that had been concerned about being sidelined in the diplomatic efforts with the North, showed "understanding" of the decision amid concerns that Pyongyang wasn't serious about giving its nuclear weapons.

"We even inwardly hoped that what is called "Mr Trump formula" would help clear both sides of their worries and comply with the requirements of our side and would be a wise way of substantial effect for settling the issue", he said, without elaborating. And after initially projecting calm in the face of North Korea's escalating rhetoric, he made a sudden about face, though his letter also waxed poetic about the "wonderful dialogue" emerging between the two leaders.

In the letter, Trump wrote that, based on the North's recent statement, he felt it was "inappropriate, at this time, to have this long-planned meeting". Kim's harsh statements - including one on Thursday calling Vice President Mike Pence "stupid", which led Trump to cancel the meeting - protested Trump administration references to a fast-track "Libya model" requiring him to give up his nuclear weapons without getting anything in return.

March 7: After visiting Kim in Pyongyang, South Korean presidential national security director Chung Eui-yong says Kim is willing to discuss the fate of his nuclear arsenal with the United States.

Still, both Trump and Kim have left open the door to rescheduling a summit they both appear to want.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in said he was "very perplexed" and that it was "very regrettable" that the summit was not going ahead. Worldwide journalists were present, but the US government can't verify the site's destruction. Putin said of Trump's cancellation announcement, "In Russia we took this news with regret". He added that his country's "objective and resolve to do our best for the sake of peace and stability of the Korean Peninsula and all humankind remain unchanged".

Senior White House officials who went to Singapore to meet their North Korean counterparts last week were stood up, officials said.

Mr Trump wrote: "If you change your mind having to do with this most important summit, please do not hesitate to call me or write".

"We got a lot of dial tones, Senator", he told committee chairman Bob Corker. In April, Trump had stunned the world by accepting an invitation to meet Kim in an unprecedented sit-down.
