Lava destroys warehouse at power plant site

Lava destroys warehouse at power plant site

Wells have been capped at a geothermal plant in Hawaii as moving lava from the Kilauea volcano eruption threatens the property.

Scientists say the methane can seep through cracks several feet away from the lava.

Nighttime photos released by the US Geological Survey were taken in the Leilani Estates neighbourhood where the volcano has been sending up lava through vents in the ground.

However, stream of red-hot lava destroyed a former geothermal project site adjacent to the PGV grounds, civil defense said.

A lava flow from one of the fissures entered the 815-acre (330-hectare) geothermal plant complex on Monday night and destroyed a warehouse, County of Hawaii government spokeswoman Janet Snyder said.

The Puna Geothermal Venture in Hawaii is secure, and if lava did encroach on it the danger of a toxic gas release is "very low", authorities said.

It's just the latest hazard from a weeks-old eruption that has so far generated earthquakes and featured gushing molten rock, giant ash plumes and sulfur dioxide.

Officials shut down Puna Geothermal shortly after Kilauea began erupting on May 3. There also were plans to install metal plugs in the wells as an additional stopgap measure.

The plant harnesses heat and steam from the earth's core to spin turbines to generate power, providing for about 25 percent of the island's daily energy demand.

"I don't know if I was in shock", Clinton said. A friend wrapped a sheet around his leg and called for help.

There have been two new small explosive eruptions at the summit of Kilauea volcano on Hawaii's Big Island.

Doctors at Hilo Medical Center, where Clinton remains under medical care, were able to save the injured leg, KHON 2 reports - which makes him lucky.

Kilauea's latest eruptive episode has upended life on parts of the Big Island since April 30, when the floor of the Puu Oo Crater, on the volcano's East Rift Zone, collapsed and sent its pool of lava back underground.

The molten rock started pouring into the sea over the weekend. Laze, a word combination of lava and haze, contains hydrochloric acid steam along with volcanic glass particles. There has been continuous low-level ash emission from Kilauea's summit with larger explosions every few hours, said U.S. Geological Survey geophysicist Mike Poland.
