AT&T to Unveil Red Hydrogen One Smartphone in LA Next Month

Both AT&T and Verizon announced today (May 17) that they will carry the Red Hydrogen One when that phone is released. Called the Hydrogen One, the handset populated tons of media outlets' homepages (including ours). The 5.7-inch phone's major feature is a holographic display that can project 3D images.

Created by RED, a company that makes high-end digital cinema cameras used by the likes of James Cameron and Michael Bay, the Hydrogen phone has been the subject of a lot of hype over the past year, despite having relatively few details about the device.

Like we said details about the phone are scarce but apparently it will feature a mysterious holographic display and camera capable of recording 3D video.

YouTube personality Marques Brownlee saw a prototype of the phone past year and was impressed by the holographic screen despite some rough edges that Red will presumably smooth over before the phone launches. However, it's unclear what carriers will charge customers to buy this phone, which is touted to have 4V - or "four-view" - tech. Even Verizon's press release echoes a similar sentiment: "you have to hold it in your hands and experience it yourself to understand why this is such a mobile game changer". RED is no longer taking pre-orders, which had been priced at $1295 for an aluminum version and $1595 for a titanium model. AT&T has only said the smartphone will be offered "later this summer", while Verizon just says before the end of 2018.

AT&T is inviting the public to their own demo of the phone on June 2 and 3, at AT&T Shape at Warner Bros.

Neither AT&T, nor Verizon has officially confirmed a specific date that the Hydrogen One will be available in stores.
