Super-hot lava threat for Hawaii as Trump declares disaster

The major disaster declaration clears the way for federal funding assistance after a series of earthquakes have shook the Big Island since May 3, sparking multiple eruptions of lava and volcanic ash.

The U.S. Geological Survey recorded more than two dozen earthquakes in the area near the east coast of the Big Island on Saturday alone.

What will take a turn for the worse in terms of hazard is if hotter, fresher magma makes it to the surface, and that could be what is coming, said Hawaiian Volcano Observatory lead scientist Tina Neal. In her latest report, she said volcanic activity was still high.

Hawaii police said they arrested Alexandru Stingu-Dragomir, 29, on suspicion he burgled four houses in Leilani Estates after the mayor declared an emergency the area on last week. Rocks "the size of cows" could be hurled as far as 800 meters from the site of the blast, according to one expert who spoke to local media.

Geologists expect new lava outbreaks in or around the hard-hit Leilani Estates area in the southeastern Puna district, about 20 miles (32 km) south of Hilo, where 27 homes have been destroyed and all 1,900 residents have been evacuated.

Travel industry executives note most of the Big Island is free of eruption threats from Kilauea, which began spurting lava into a residential neighborhood last week.

Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park requested the restriction due to the possibility of a steam-driven explosive eruption in Halemaumau Crater at Kilauea's summit that could send of ash, rocks and volcanic debris over the surrounding areas. The volcano began erupting May 3.

Another lava vent has opened on Hawaii's Big Island as the USA authorities warn of a possible explosive eruption of the island's Kilauea volcano, the Hawaii County Civil Defense said. About 2,000 people have been evacuated. The recent volcanic activity in Hawaii has also caused countless earthquakes, including a magnitude 6.9 natural disaster on May 4m which was the strongest quake to strike Hawaii since 1975. As a result, lava levels inside the volcano's main crater have been decreasing.
