Golovkin eyes history against Alvarez stand

Golovkin eyes history against Alvarez stand

Golovkin has now tied the record of Bernard Hopkins with his 20th title defense in the middleweight division.

Instead, Golovkin finds himself back in his adopted home in Southern California, where he's making a fraction of that potential payday to fight a gritty veteran contender with nothing to lose in a famous outdoor ring where insane things happen regularly.

Golovkin dropped Vanes Martirosyan (36-4-1, 21 KOs) with a barrage of punches in the second round to win by knockout.

Last night's event had been slated for a rematch between Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez. Canelo Alvarez quickly blamed the failed drug test on contaminated meat he ate in his home country of Mexico.

An overwhelmed Martirosyan said Golovkin was the hardest puncher he had ever faced and was the hardest he had ever been hit. I want to have as many fights as possible.

Which brings the point to this - How did an albeit unknown fighter like Martirosyan come to be paired up against a both feared and respected, likely to be in the hall-of-fame someday, champion like Gennady Golovkin? I just want to beat him once and for all.

Before the fight, he pegged the odds of facing Alvarez in September, when Alvarez's suspension will have ended, at 10 percent.

"This is my destiny fight", Martirosyan said at the final pre-fight press conference.

The unbeaten Golovkin also defended the WBC and IBO titles, which he won later than he captured the WBA crown.

Instead, Canelo was replaced by Vanes Martirosyan.

Martirosyan fell face first in his own corner as referee Jack Reiss tolled the count.

But then Golovkin inflicted a series of blows.

In steps Martirosyan (36-3-1).

"There is a question mark about whether there will be a fight in September or not", Golovkin told ESPN. Although he never admitted that he wanted the fight to end in a KO, it appears that as the first bell rung, thats all He wanted to do. Says Braekhus, who continues to hone her skills as she matures, "I am definitely another fighter today than I was ten years ago, and I always have to adapt to that, I always have to adapt to stay sharp". The NSAC suspended Alvarez for six months April 18 for failing two performance-enhancing drug tests in February.

Golovkin is bothered by it, but he's still fighting Martirosyan. "We made a lot more concessions than the other side did", Golovkin adds. English WBO champ Billy Joe Saunders has kept the only remaining hardware out of Golovkin's grasp, repeatedly declining Golovkin's challenges.
