British doctors angrily reject Trump's 'war zone' comments on knife crime

"No-one has guns in Paris", Trump said, adding that the Paris victims were killed by "a small group of terrorists". But the doctor who may have inspired that comment says the President missed the point entirely. "They have knives and instead there's blood all over the floors of this hospital", he said.

During the NRA speech, Trump also took a swipe at the UK's tight gun control, against the backdrop of its soaring knife crime, and painted a nightmarish scene of an unidentified hospital in the country's capital. They're getting used to it.

He offered to invite Trump to "my (prestigious) hospital" to meet with London's police commissioner and mayor to discuss the city's success in reducing violence.

Trump seems to have been referring to comments made last month by Griffiths, who said military colleagues had described their work as being similar to a United Kingdom military base in Afghanistan.

Victims group 13 Onze 15, which represents people injured in the 2015 violence, had demanded a response from the French government after the latest salvo. Thirty-one of the 47 murders committed in London this year, as of early April, used knives, Reuters reported.

It's unclear what hospital Trump was referring to.

Last month, trauma surgeon Martin Griffiths told the BBC that some of his colleagues had likened the Royal London Hospital in east London where he works to the former British military base Camp Bastion in Afghanistan.

If anyone had any hope that President Trump would adopt a more conciliatory stance towards Britain before his visit in July, it was dashed on Friday, when he appeared before a National Rifle Association conference in Dallas and took a jab at London's crime rate.

Trump's comment on the Paris attacks did not go down well with the French.

"There is more we can all do to combat this violence, but to suggest guns are part of the solution is ridiculous", Brohi tweeted. "Gunshot wounds are at least twice as lethal as knife injuries and more hard to fix", Brohi said in the statement on Saturday. In April, after the statistics comparing London and New York's homicide rates were publicized, London Mayor Sadiq Khan tweeted that, "There is never a reason to carry a knife".

Though Trump does have some vocal admirers in Britain, the majority of the country views him negatively - a poll conducted earlier this year found just one in 10 Britons thought he was a good or great president, 67 percent of the country said that he had been "poor" or "terrible".
