From Columbine To Parkland, Student Activists Talk Out What's Changed

Amid recent warnings from the district, students at Lakewood Ranch High School have chose to hold an after-school demonstration rather than a school walkout on Friday, the 19th anniversary of a mass shooting at Columbine High School in Colorado.

The organizer's website called National School Walkout a student movement to protest congressional, state and local "failures to take action to prevent gun violence". There is a planned 13-second moment of silence to honor the people who lost their life in the Columbine High School massacre 19 years ago.

Students walked out March 14 in protest of the Parkland, Florida, shootings.

Spotsylvania schools spokeswoman Rene Daniels said it would be a "regular instructional day", and that students must receive a note from their parents in order to leave class.

It wasn't so much the February 14 massacre at Stoneman Douglas but the absence in her community of any profound response to it that gave root to Lane's mission. "It is important to emphasize that it is our mission to provide every student with a high quality education in a safe environment that leads to success in their future endeavors".

About 11 percent of the students that attend Stoneman Douglas are black.

Parents of teens express similar concerns, with 63 percent saying they are at least somewhat anxious about the possibility of a shooting at their kid's school.

"I thought, originally, it would just be my school but, obviously, it's grown", she said. On March 20, to observe the anniversary, approximately 120 students from North Caroline High School gathered on the athletic field for 17 minutes, and three students from Colonel Richardson High School met in the auditorium for 17 minutes.

"While we certainly want to support students who choose to express their concerns, we can not disregard our responsibility for maintaining a safe and orderly learning environment", Johnson said in an email.

Students across the country are set to walk out of class at 10 a.m. This would allow students who want to participate to do so and those who don't could go on to class, according to SCHS Principal Joe Covington.

Lakewood Ranch High School plans to move their walkout to after school school.

"Before I was learning how to read or write, I was learning how to sit in a dark classroom to make sure a shooter won't see us", said Kirk, a high school junior inFairfax County, Virginia.

"I know that Douglas just wants to do right by them". The students say school shootings have become a common occurrence and a fact of life for schools across the country.

"Student responses have ranged from opposing protests to complete support", said Coleman and Adams.

California Teachers Association members and leaders joined by elected officials and community supporters will take part in multiple statewide events on Friday, April 20, demanding that action be taken to end the school shootings that have been devastating American schools.
