False alarm set off Syrian air defences- pro-Assad commander

"Last night, a false alarm that Syrian air space had been penetrated triggered the blowing of air defence sires and the firing of several missiles", state news agency SANA quoted a military source as saying.

It also reported that the missiles were shot down by the country's air defenses. Approximately nine missiles reportedly targeted the base; their source isn't yet clear.

While it remains unclear who launched the attack, the reported strike comes just days after Washington, London and Paris carried out a coordinated strike in Syria in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Syria has strongly rejected the allegations as fabrication.

Reports in government-run media earlier on Tuesday claimed missiles were fired at an air base in the Homs area, while a media unit run by the Lebanese group Hezbollah said missiles had also targeted an air base near Damascus. "We don't have anything additional to provide", Marine Maj.

The United States has blamed Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad for the Syrian chemical attacks.

Asked about the incident, an Israeli military spokesman said: "We don't comment on such reports".

The Syrian military believes Israeli warplanes were responsible.

On Monday Hezbollah's Deputy Secretary General Naim Qassem warned that Iran and Israel are nearing open war as tensions are very high in Syria.

The day before thousands of Syrian citizens, along with various political and religious forces, gathered in the main squares and streets of various provinces, including Damascus, Homs and Aleppo, in which they repudiated the devious western tripartite attack on Syria. That was the same airbase the U.S. struck in 2017 in response to a chemical weapons attack at Khan Sheikhoun.

"There is no U.S. military activity in that area at this time", Eric Pahond, a Pentagon spokesman said when asked about the strike in Homs.

Hezbollah and other Iranian-backed militias have a large military presence in Syria and are well entrenched in central and eastern areas near the Iraqi border.
