Russia Says Priority in Syria to Avert Danger of War

Speaking at a news conference in the capital, Maria Zaharova condemned the threats from U.S. President Donald Trump aimed not only at Syria, but also Russian Federation.

Russian currency and stock markets, preoccupied with the threat of USA military action in Syria and the fallout from Washington's new sanctions, did not react to the draft legislation, which will be discussed in the lower house next week.

That did not necessarily signal, however, that Trump was cooling to the idea of military action, especially given the high stakes in Syria.

US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley stated Friday that chemical weapons were used in an attack in Syria that left scores dead and she blamed Russian Federation for complicity, as the Trump administration continues to weigh how to retaliate and Russian Federation maintains its denial that the attack took place. "We're still working on this".

At the House hearing, Democrats grilled Mattis on the wisdom and legality of Trump ordering an attack on Syria without explicit authorization from Congress. Mattis argued it would be justified as an act of self-defense, with 2,000 USA ground troops in Syria; he insisted he could not talk about military plans because an attack "is not yet in the offing".

Mr. Trump told reporters on Monday during a Cabinet meeting that the administration would be making a "major" decision on Syria within the next 24 to 48 hours.

The one-off missile strike in April 2017 targeted the airfield from which the Syrian aircraft had launched their gas attack.

Allied missiles struck at the heart of Syrian chemical weapons arsenal in a show of force and resolve aimed at punishing the Assad government for a suspected poison gas attack against civilians and deterring the possible future use of such banned weapons. This is in contrast to an incident one year ago in which the US government had video and other evidence of certain aspects of an actual attack by Syrian aircraft, which involved the use of sarin gas. "As other nations step up their contributions, we look forward to the day when we can bring our warriors home". We are totally predictable.

Trump did not detail what a strike on Syria would look like, or whether these would be USA missiles.

Lavrov noted that Russian and USA militaries have a hotline to prevent incidents, adding that it's not clear if it would be sufficient amid mounting tensions. Trump canceled a foreign trip in order to manage a crisis that is testing his vow to stand up to Assad. She said of the alleged chemical attack that "Russia can complain all it wants about fake news, but no one is buying its lies and its cover-ups".

The White House press secretary, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, said in a brief statement after Trump met with Mattis and other members of his National Security Council: "No final decision has been made".

Trump's administration has sought to show toughness on Russian Federation, with a series of economic and diplomatic actions, including new sanctions last week against government officials and oligarchs.

Some analysts say the chemical attacks will continue unless Russian and Iran suffer consequences for supporting Assad's tactics. A joint military operation, possibly with France rather than the U.S.in the lead, could send a message of worldwide unity about enforcing the prohibitions on chemical weapons.

Damascus agreed to hand over its chemical arsenal in 2013, narrowly avoiding American and French air strikes in retaliation for a suspected sarin attack.

Mattis said that although the United States has no hard proof, he believes the Syrian government was responsible for Saturday's attack.

The U.S., United Kingdom and France are all North Atlantic Treaty Organisation members. The ministry additionally pointed to previous alleged use of chemicals by the rebels in fighting with Syrian government troops.
