She contacted police immediately but the pair carried on living together and in July, got married in front of Katie's adoptive parents and Steven's mother.

About 20 minutes earlier, 600 miles north in New Milford, Conn., police responded to a report of a shooting and found a man and a woman dead in a pickup truck with NY plates, the victims of a double homicide.

In a 911 call Thursday, Steven Pladl's mother said her son told her he killed 20-year-old Katie Pladl, Fusco and the baby.

The baby's body was found inside Pladl's home, in Knightdale, N.C., where he was being cared for by Pladl's mother. Stay on top of breaking news stories with the ABC11 News App The child had been in the custody of his grandmother since his mother and father were arrested in January for incest.

New Milford resident Jeff Weinzievl, who lives near the intersection where Katie Pladl and her adoptive father were found, told the Connecticut Post he was feeding his horses when he heard six to eight shots from what sounded like a semi-automatic weapon. "Yes, my son just called me and told me he killed his baby", the mother said in an anguished voice to the 911 operator.

Then, police found a man and a woman shot to death in a pickup truck in New Milford, Connecticut, after a passerby reported the shooting.

"My son just called me. It was unknown who was inside so we brought in Emergency Police Services", said New York State Police Capt. John Ryan. Police confirmed he had killed himself in his vehicle after driving across state lines into NY. He said Katie had been living in NY with her adoptive parents.

The couple reportedly married in July 2017 and their son was born a few months later, in September. In August 2016, she moved in with her biological parents and their two other children.

Steven and Katie were arrested January 27 and charged with adultery and donating to delinquency.

"We're trying to make sense of all the factors that led up to this senseless taking of life", Chief Capps said. He and his former wife, Alyssa, gave birth to Katie 20 years ago, when she was 17 years old. "I didn't ask him, I didn't want to know", she said. It's a home they shared with his ex-wife Alyssa - who is also Katie's mother - and two younger sisters.
