School district to arm teachers with mini baseball bats

All 500 teachers with Millcreek School District on Monday were given 16-inch bats amid a training session on how to respond to school shootings, the Erie-Times News reported.

In a story you're going to be convinced originated on the satirical website The Onion, a Pennsylvania school district is arming its teachers with baseball bats.

Kleser said that parents may be in support of the new model because of the addition of art classes and added physical education (PE) time, and teachers are in favor of those details, too. "But, it is an option and something we want people to be aware of".

The unorthodox weaponry is part of a wider plan to fortify Millcreek schools against armed intruders which includes "concrete barriers, constructing secured entrances at several schools and hiring a consulting firm to re-evaluate security measures", USA Today reports.

The deadly school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High in Parkland, Fla., drove Millcreek to institute other safety measures aside from the bats.

TOWAMENCIN North Penn School District employees, school board members and local law enforcement joined together Wednesday night to present a clear message to the community.

Another Pennsylvania district made news last month when it announced that it is arming students with rocks as protection against the possibility of a school shooter.

An online question submitted through the district's NPTV channel asked how the district helps students who are in distress before they become serious, and Rufo said staff are trained to build an individual, personal connection with each student.

Hall emphasized that the bats are not a way of arming the teachers, but rather offering a tool that can be used in a crisis situation. "Obviously, after Parkland, we went back and looked at our active shooter and hard lockdown response and realized that it had to change", Hall he told the Post.

"We passed them out, with the goal being we wanted every room to have one of these", said Hall.

Oklahoma Republican Gov. Mary Fallin approved teacher pay raises of about $6,100, but many educators say that's not enough because classrooms still need more money.

"I'm quite honored to receive the award and it's awesome that my students would take time to recognize me like that", Golden Apple Recipient Tyler Brackey said.
