Public corruption prosecutors in the USA attorney's office in Manhattan are trying to determine if there was any fraud related to the payments to Karen McDougal and Stormy Daniels, according to one of the people.

A source familiar with the raid told CNN that agents also secured Cohen's computer, business files and financial documents.

Cohen has said he came up with the money, using a home equity line of credit, and claims did not inform his own client, the future president.

More: Who is Michael Cohen? I would imagine that if the special counsel's office hadn't been interested in Trump-related accounts there already, word of the president's tantrum must have piqued some interest.

He said "Attorney-client privilege is dead!" and called the special-counsel investigation "A TOTAL WITCH HUNT!".

But because it was not about Russia, Mueller alerted Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein. The White House cited a need to remain in the United States to monitor the US response to a suspected chemical attack in Syria. "Many people have said, 'You should fire him, ' " the president added.

Authorities working with Mueller chose a similar tactic last summer when they raided the home of former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, who was subsequently indicted.

Under Justice Department regulations, Mueller must consult with Rosenstein when his investigators uncover new evidence that may fall outside his original mandate.

Michael Avenatti, the lawyer representing Stormy Daniels in her case against Donald Trump's personal lawyer Michael Cohen, appeared on CNN today to tear into the president's attorney as "moronic", "ludicrous", and "beyond stupid". McDougal was paid $150,000 by The National Enquirer tabloid to keep quiet about the alleged affair, and like Daniels, she is now suing to be released from the non-disclosure agreement over the Trump affair.

Her first mental note was a prescient one, occurring to her hours before the story of the raid broke: "You'll know he's in deep deep doo-doo", she says she thought, "if they ever raid him personally".

Both Cohen and Manafort were cooperating with investigators at the time of the raids, which begs the question: what prompted such an aggressive tactic by the Federal Bureau of Investigation? In an email to ThinkProgress, Daniels' lawyer, Michael Avenatti, stated, "We are confident the motion will be denied".

Several former officials at the Federal Election Commission have said the payment could have violated campaign finance laws because it may amount to an unreported campaign donation. It's possible that there is evidence of Cohen's involvement in other domestic crimes unrelated to Russian Federation and that Mueller's probe is focused on Cohen's global activity on behalf of the Trump Organization. Trump has said he didn't know about the payment.

A longtime lawyer for President Trump argued in a new court filing this week that he was simply being "hyperbolic" when he suggested adult film actress Stormy Daniels was lying about an affair she claimed to have had with President Trump.

The raid raises a host of questions and highlights the many ways that Cohen, long known as Trump's personal fixer, now could find himself in legal jeopardy.

"Just because something isn't true doesn't mean that it can't cause you hurt or damage", Cohen said at the time.

"Do I need this in my life? Do I want to be involved in this? No".

Tax records show some of his companies now owe thousands of dollars in mandatory per-ride state transportation taxes. Freidman was charged past year by state prosecutors with pocketing $5 million in state transportation taxes. Of these four Trump associates, three-Papadopoulos, Flynn, and Gates-are already coöperating with Muller, having pleaded guilty to felonies.
