Trump anger over Federal Bureau of Investigation raids sparks speculation of Mueller firing

McDougal's attorney, Peter Stris, declined to comment on the Cohen investigation.

Even if Trump were to succeed in getting rid of Mueller-which would be sure to provoke an enormous political backlash, and maybe even impeachment proceedings in Congress-the NY investigation, which is centered on Cohen, would continue. They include allegations that the $130,000 Cohen has acknowledged paying Daniels days before the presidential election amounted to an illegal, excessive campaign contribution.

President Donald Trump's personal attorney, Michael Cohen, says he's rethinking how he handled a $130,000 payment to porn actress Stormy Daniels.

Cohen would not comment further on the raid, but acknowledged the raids and attention have had an impact on his family.

And the law enforcement action will nearly certainly amplify the public scrutiny on the payment to Daniels, who says she had sex with Trump in 2006. Cohen arranged the Daniels payment in the final weeks of the presidential campaign.

Now, Trump is denying that he ever knew anything about this settlement, and told reporters on Air Force One to "ask Michael Cohen" if they want to know the details of the settlement. He is maintaining his innocence.

Cohen, who is under the microscope in multiple threads of investigations by NY state and federal prosecutors, resigned himself to the reality of the situation, admitting to CNN that he is anxious about what's next.

"Today the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of NY executed a series of search warrants and seized the privileged communications between my client, Michael Cohen, and his clients", Cohen's attorney Stephen M. Ryan of McDermott Will & Emery, Washington, said in an April 9 statement.

Watchdog groups, including Common Cause, had lodged complaints with Justice Department and the Federal Election Commission about the Daniels' payment months before Avenatti's lawsuit.

Last month, Clifford told 21 million TV watchers that she had unprotected sex with Trump after meeting with him at a celebrity golf tournament in Lake Tahoe, California in July 2006. Last week, Trump told the White House press pool that he wasn't aware of the payment at the time it was made.

The FBI agents who searched the office of Donald Trump's personal lawyer were looking for records related to Karen McDougal, a former Playboy model who claims she had an affair with Trump.

The special counsel is also probing a $150 000 payment Ukrainian billionaire steel magnate Victor Pinchuk made during the USA presidential campaign to Trump's foundation for the American real estate developer to give a 20-minute speech via video link, according to The New York Times.

McConnell was pressed Tuesday on whether the Senate is doing enough to prevent the possibility of President Donald Trump firing Mueller.

There have been few signs that Mueller was interested in investigating the payment, though.

Giving business advice and communicating with people other than the client, for example, aren't covered by the privilege, he said. "One effect of Avenatti's skillful use of the press is that the Department of Justice knows and the Trump administration knows that the public is watching".

"I think it's going to get gnarly this weekend", said a Republican strategist in frequent touch with the White House. "He should be allowed to finish the job he was assigned".

Trump on Monday reacted with anger to the raids on Cohen, calling the actions - which were carried out with search warrants approved by a judge - "an attack on our country in a true sense".

"This may mark the end of the kind of cooperation that Trump's lawyers have been involved with", Dershowitz said Monday in an interview.

Cohen did not fault the Federal Bureau of Investigation agents who conducted the raid at his house, office and a hotel where he is temporarily staying...

Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, a friend of Trump, called the Cohen raids "a little heavy-handed".

The prosecutors obtained the search warrant after receiving a referral from the special counsel in the Russian Federation investigation, Mr Robert Mueller, according to Mr Cohen's lawyer, who called the search "completely inappropriate and unnecessary".

The White House remained defiant that the president has the power to directly fire Mueller - despite Justice Department regulations saying otherwise. "When I heard that he'd actually spoken to Don Lemon, I didn't believe it until I saw Don's report". Rosenstein has repeatedly said that he has not seen any reason to dismiss Mueller.

Criticizing Mueller for veering into "highly personal issues", such as the alleged Daniels encounter, Giuliani added, "The only thing that's happening, perhaps, is that Mueller is trying to compel the president to testify".

"This is Watergate-level stuff", White told the network. Monday's raid was first reported by The New York Times. Trump officials have denied he had relations with either woman.

He also argues she hasn't suffered any damages and that his statements were an opinion and "rhetorical hyperbole" under the law.

The raid prompted a new blast Tuesday from the president, who tweeted that "Attorney-client privilege is dead!" He added: "A TOTAL WITCH HUNT!"

The raid was overseen by the U.S. Attorney's office in Manhattan and was based in part on a referral from special counsel Mueller, said Cohen's lawyer, Stephen Ryan.
