Israel strikes Gaza after explosive devices found on border

Following last Friday's violent confrontations between Gazans and Israeli security forces along the Gaza border, Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman was hesitant and unwilling to accept claims that Yasser Murtaja, who was among those killed, was simply a well-known media correspondent.

"We are going overboard with this video", said Erdan, from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud party.

Israel has accused Hamas of using the protests as a cover for carrying out attacks and bringing infiltrators into Israel. "We won't let them down". "We will hurt them".

Israel has faced mounting questions over its use of live fire after 10 days of protests and clashes along the Gaza Strip border.

"The video, which shows Israeli soldiers deliberately killing an unarmed Palestinian near the border fence, was filmed during Gaza's recent border rallies", Karim Jubran, a field research director for B'Tselem, an Israeli rights group, told Anadolu Agency on Tuesday.

In a statement summarising a preliminary investigation, the military spokesman said the incident took place took place on December 22, amid Palestinian unrest at US President Donald Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as the Israeli capital.

The statement said the footage was not filmed by the Israeli sharpshooter but by a soldier from a different unit.

The strike came a day after the chief prosecutor for the International Criminal Court raised concerns that Israel and Hamas may have committed war crimes during the current spasm of violence. Since March 30, there have been two mass demonstrations on Fridays, and another one is expected this Friday.

On March 30th, thousands of Palestinians from across the besieged Gaza Strip launched "The Great March of Return", to demand their right to return to their pre-1948 homelands in historic Palestine.

Hamas has called for Palestinians to amass at the border as part of a weekslong campaign of protests against a decade-old Israeli and Egyptian blockade of the territory.

Hamas, considered a terrorist group by Israel and its Western allies, has controlled Gaza since ousting forces of internationally recognized President Mahmoud Abbas in 2007. Hamas has fought three cross-border wars with Israel, and its political charter calls for Israel's destruction.

The killing of Palestinian journalist Yaser Murtaja by an Israeli sniper, with what the head of Reporters Without Borders called "an intentional shot", understandably got worldwide headlines.

As The Washington Post reported, "accounts of paramedics, medical officials, surgeons, hospital logs and the sheer pace of gunshot injuries coming from the crowd at points during the protests" have all pointed to the same "high figures" as released by the Ministry of Health in Gaza.
