Drake, Taylor Swift, Katy Perry Videos Targeted in YouTube Hack

A handful of YouTube music videos-including the most popular video in YouTube history-were defaced on Tuesday following an apparent hack.

Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee's "Decpacito", the most-viewed video on YouTube and the first to reach 5 billion views, was removed and replaced by a disturbing image of masked men in red hoods holding guns.

Videos by Taylor Swift, Drake and Selena Gomez were also among those affected by the breach. The Verge reports that some of the videos from the aforementioned singers were available with defaced titles and thumbnail images.

"In that respect then, it is in itself, nothing much to worry about for the video hosting site, though it does suggest that the defacement of videos is not technically hard to achieve, given the number of high profile artists that have been targeted".

A Twitter account allegedly belonging to one of the hackers posted "It's just for fun, I just use [the] script "youtube-change-title-video" and I write "hacked" and "Don't judge me I love YouTube". The next incident may be less of a prank (as this appears to be) and more of a malicious campaign. We are working to reinstate all videos affected and our catalog to be restored to full working order. "We are continuing to investigate the source of the breach", Vevo wrote. The Independent believes the hackers could only change the names and thumbnails of videos, rather than delete them.

Hackers calling themselves Prosox and Kuroi'SH took to Twitter on Tuesday to brag about the disruption to Google's popular video-sharing platform. Cyber-security expert Prof Alan Woodward, from Surrey University, said via BBC News that "t$3 o upload and alter video content with code you should require an authorisation token". Outside of music videos, others have been affected as well, so it's unclear if there was a target in mind for this.
