Syria 'chemical attack': Russian Federation and U.S. in fierce row at UN

Syrian government forces were on high alert and taking precautionary measures Tuesday at military positions across the country amid fears of a US strike in the aftermath of an apparent chemical weapons attack near Damascus.

The US leader met with his cabinet and then dined with top generals, telling reporters "we have a lot of options militarily and we ll be letting you know pretty soon. probably after the fact".

The Assad regime stands accused of carrying out a toxic gas attack Saturday on Douma, the last opposition-held town in the eastern Ghouta suburb of Damascus.

In the more than six years of Syria's civil war, Assad, who is backed by Russian Federation and Vladimir Putin, has been repeatedly accused of using chemical weapons against Syrian civilians.

The White House says President Donald Trump is focused on responding to the apparent use of chemical weapons in Syria.

In November, Russia used its veto power at the council to block the renewal of a previous UN-led probe that found the Syrian air force had dropped sarin on the town of Khan Sheikhun in April past year.

"His forces are already responsible for previous chemical weapons attacks and other actions targeting civilians", she said.

Russian representative Vassily Nebenzia said the incident in Douma was staged and that United States military action in response could have "grave repercussions".

Israel on Monday joined the global outcry over a toxic gas attack that killed dozens in Syria on Saturday.

Medical teams at the shelters have reported skin disease and respiratory problems among children, said a spokesman for the United Nations children's agency, UNICEF. "SAMS and the Syrian Civil Defense demand an immediate cease-fire in the city of Douma and the entry of worldwide investigation teams from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) to investigate this heinous chemical attack", SAMS said.

Does Trump believe that his political base is more up for a major USA war in Syria today than it was then?

What are the consequences if Trump does not respond militarily and pulls USA troops out of Syria too soon?

"But I think we really need to find out as quickly as we can what the hallmarks of this attack were, and I do believe that we will be able to figure out if it was an attack by the Assad regime", Shea told VOA. President Putin, Russia and Iran are responsible for backing Animal Assad.

Russian Federation vetoed a Western-backed resolution in November that would have extended the mandate of the joint UN-Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons body that had blamed the Syrian government and the Islamic State extremist group for using chemical weapons.

Haley also said: "We are beyond showing pictures of dead babies".

Trump on Tuesday cancelled plans to travel to South America later this week, choosing to stay in the United States to manage the response to the events in Syria. "Were talking about humanity, and it cant be allowed to happen", he said.

Earlier, the United Nations human rights chief said world powers were treating chemical weapons use with a "collective shrug".

Another chlorine attack was in Saraqib, a city in the rebel-held enclave of Idlib, in northwestern Syria.

The Syrian government and the Kremlin have denied involvement in the attack.

Syrian state media and Russian Foreign Ministry did not take responsibility for Saturday's attacks in Douma. Americans rose up as one and said we do not want another Middle East war.
