Funeral Held For Journalist Shot During Protest at Gaza Border

Hardened by years of rocket attacks from next-door Gaza, residents of this frontline Israeli village seemed unmoved on Sunday by Palestinians' mass demonstrations at the border and Israel's deadly response to them.

WAFA said in its monthly report of Israeli violations against journalists that 16 journalists were either shot and injured by Israeli forces, suffocated from teargas or were beaten by Israeli soldiers.

There have been no reported Israeli casualties.

Israel has repeatedly stated that it would not allow its border to be breached and has fired live ammunition to prevent Palestinians from approaching or sabotaging the border fence.

The Israeli military responded with riot dispersal means, and fired in accordance with the rules of engagement, the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) said in a statement.

The army said on Friday that protesters had thrown explosive devices and firebombs. "The result was foreseeable deaths and injuries of demonstrators on the other side of a border who posed no imminent threat to life", he said. On Friday, Israel continued its series of massacres in the besieged city of Gaza with snipers killing Yaser and nine other civilians during the Great March of Return protests.

Earlier on Friday, the United Nations human rights office deplored the reported use of "excessive force" by Israeli soldiers during the March 30 protests in Gaza, where at least 16 people were killed and more than 1,000 others injured.

A Palestinian farmer was also killed last week the before dawn on Friday, March 30th, the first day of the massive demonstration.

In a statement on Saturday, the Palestinian ministry said 79 injured Palestinians were in a serious condition.

The Palestinian Red Crescent Society, which has established five advanced medical posts near various protest sites, also warned of a shortage of medical supplies and of personal protective equipment for their 400-person team.

Having failed to condemn Israel's premeditated slaughter last week, the European Union put out a statement Thursday night urging Palestinians to "avoid any incitement to violence" and to "remain strictly nonviolent", even though not a single Israeli has been reported injured as a result of the protests.

Its main message is to call for the right of return for Palestinian refugees who were driven from their homes in the territories taken over by Israel during the 1948 war, known to Arabs as the Nakba.

In the West Bank political capital of Ramallah, around 50 Palestinian journalists held a vigil for Murtaja.
