Zuma court case adjourned to 8 June

Zuma court case adjourned to 8 June

The arms deal totalled 30 billion rand, or $2.5 billion at current exchange rates, and led to what is considered the single biggest instance of public corruption in the history of post-apartheid South Africa.

A high court in Durban has adjourned the case to June 8, 2018, after state prosecutors and Zuma's lawyers asked for more time to prepare submissions.

Zuma, who came to power as president shortly after the charges were first dropped in 2009, has always denied any wrongdoing. Mr Zuma has done a lot of good for South Africa but that is being overshadowed by this case.

"Some people are acting like I have been convicted, I am innocent until proven guilty", he said.He then led them in song and dance. Zuma has been linked to a 1990s arms deal.

Thales, which supplied naval vessels as part of the deal, also faces charges with corruption and a company representative appeared in court alongside Zuma.

Despite that, Zuma still has strong support among the South African masses with the reports of thousands to attend a pro-Zuma march on Friday.

In a controversial manner, the case was dropped and Zuma went ahead to become the president.

Speaking in Zulu, his home province, Zuma said that the judiciary and politicians believed that he did not have rights. The former leader was recently deployed to KwaZulu-Natal, the province with the biggest number of ANC supporters, to drum up support during a voter-registration drive.

In the courtroom, supporters chanted his name, while outside, the crowds sang "Tell us what he has done wrong" and "Hands off Zuma".

Thuman Mkhize, 43 and unemployed, from Durban said Zuma "was the flawless leader" because he "opened free education and land". "The problem now, the one I'm hated and vilified for, is that freedom without economic freedom is not complete", Zuma said.

Zuma announced his resignation in a televised address to the people on Wednesday, February 14.

Some of the roads around the grand court building had been cordoned off, while a large stage was erected by Mr Zuma's supporters a few metres from the courthouse.

The support for Mr. Zuma had begun on Thursday with a night vigil, followed by prayers for him by several religious leaders. The ex-president faces charges of corruption, fraud, money laundering and racketeering.

Ramaphosa has said that, under the agreement, Zuma will have to reimburse the state if he eventually loses the case.
