Prince Charles supports republic: Keating

Queensland Governor Paul de Jersey, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and High Court Chief Justice Susan Kiefel were part of the welcoming party.

The couple also created plenty of smiles when they visited Lady Cilento Children's Hospital.

Prince of Wales: Former Labour Prime Minister Keating, in office from 1991 to 1996, wrote in a British newspaper on Sunday: 'I have no doubt Prince Charles believes Australia should be free of the British monarchy and that it should make its own way in the world'.

Around an hour before their arrival the scene was far from a fairytale welcome, with pouring rain and just a few eager well-wishers standing behind metal barriers. "I'm shaking. The Prince's were chunky".

However, Prince Charles reportedly declined the invitation.

Commonwealth Games Federation CEO David Grevemberg said: "It all goes back to her speech to the Commonwealth on her 21st birthday in Cape Town in 1947 and dedicating her life to the Commonwealth".

Juliet Rieden, The Australian Women's Weekly's editor-at-large and royal correspondent, is now on tour with Charles and Camilla in Queensland as the royal couple attend various events as part of their commitment to opening the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.

"This was also happening so we thought 'when will we get this chance again?'" she said.

Charles and Camilla's most recent visit saw them tour Adelaide, Tanunda, Canberra, Sydney, Albany and Perth in 2015.

It comes at an important time for the British monarchy, with republican sentiment gaining traction in Australia.

Before completing his visit to Queensland, Prince Charles will watch the Commonwealth Games women's basketball competition in Cairns - meeting the teams afterwards - and will attend a celebration marking the 90th anniversary of the Royal Flying Doctor Service in addition to visiting Daintree Rainforest to learn about the rainforest's unique ecosystem.
