Apple exploring curved screens and 'touchless' gestures for future iPhones

U.S. tech giant Apple is reportedly working on OLED curved display and air touch controls (gesture control) for upcoming iPhones, signalling a shift in its design control for future.

To stay ahead, Apple needs compelling new features and designs.

This news comes after Apple is set to ditch Intel chips in 2020.

A potential new screen, meanwhile, would curve slightly inward from the top of the phone to the bottom.

Samsung now uses smartphone screens that curve, but its curved screens slope down at the edges, rather than from top to bottom.

OLED, or organic light emitting diode, displays can be shaped into curves or even folded, unlike the less-flexible LCD screen technology used in prior iPhones.

Samsung has used the sensors in smartphones to give phone users the ability to control their screens without touching them. While 3D Touch responds differently based on the pressure applied on the display, the new air gesture feature would work according to the proximity of a finger to the screen, a person with knowledge on the matter said. The report said that the iPhone display Apple is now developing detects finger gestures even without physically touching the screen. This was available on the Samsung Galaxy S4. Google's ATAP research group has been working on similar technology through a program known as Project Soli. The gestures wouldn't need to be close to the screen like how Apple is developing its gesture feature. "Its Retina display, powerful chip, enhanced cameras and advanced sensors, including a gyroscope and accelerometer for accurate motion tracking, are created to support the next generation of AR apps".

Nothing is certain, and with the time frame that is provided in the report, these features could change.

Bloomberg on Wednesday reported that Apple's iPhone engineers are working on some pretty interesting things that could hit the market in the not-too-distant future. The touchless gesture control is something that's been implemented in Samsung phones already but Apple's design seems to work on a different principle entirely. Patents have been filed, but the technology to create this feature still hasn't caught up with the idea.
