USA policy on Syria in focus

Twice in a week, Trump has said he'll be pulling troops out of Syria soon.

Trump's remarks follow comments last week when he vowed USA forces would soon quit Syria even as some of his top officials stressed the need to stay for the long term to stabilise areas freed from IS.

Erdogan said the Turkish and Russian militaries were discussing the possibility of establishing field hospitals in Syria's Tal Abyad town to care for people injured in the Syrian government offensive on the rebel-held Damascus suburbs of eastern Ghouta.

"As far as Syria is concerned, our primary mission in terms of that was getting rid of ISIS", Trump answered.

"The United States and our partners remain committed to eliminating the small ISIS presence in Syria that our forces have not already eradicated", it added.

Trump also repeated a claim he has made in recent weeks that the U.S. had spent $7 trillion in the Middle East since 2001 - a figure that has been discredited - and had received "nothing" in return.

"I think it's important to recognize in both of these areas that while in Iraq where we've liberated the terrain, [ISIS is] no longer governing, no longer exerting taxes, no longer performing governmental functions like they have in the past", Votel said. "Nothing. Nothing", Trump stated, referring to U.S.'s counterterrorism missions in Syria. The senior official said the impression Trump left was that he would like to withdraw in a year or less.

Trump reiterates necessity for USA troops to leave Syria unless Riyadh pays for continuation of United States presence there.

Either scenario would reveal Islamic State's ability to control territory and move around in Syria even after USA -led coalition forces have decimated the extremist group's fighting ability.

"Saudi Arabia is very interested in our decision".

Trump told rally-goers in OH last week that he was eyeing a quick exit from Syria after the defeat of Islamic State, saying, "We'll be coming out of Syria very soon".

"We also bring with a full heart our solidarity with you", he said at a press conference held late Tuesday in Qamishli, a city in northeastern Syria's Kurdish heartland.

The triple alliance of Russia, Turkey and Iran, now the dominant actors in Syria's war, is stepping up efforts to impose a peace.

Washington is a bitter foe of Iran's and has criticised Russia's support for a regime accused of slaughtering and starving civilians - and of using banned chemical weapons.

And Iran would be free to extend its role to the Iraqi border, creating a continuous zone of influence between Teheran and its Lebanese ally Hezbollah, which has also deployed to Syria.

Why do USA commanders want to stay?

In a joint statement, the foreign ministers of Britain, France, Germany and the United States also sternly criticized Russian Federation for failing to strip its ally of his deadly chemical arsenal.
