Lord Sugar deletes tweet showing Corbyn next to Hitler after backlash

Shadow Northern Ireland minister Stephen Pound insisted that Labour is not an anti-Semitic party, but acknowledged that it "without doubt" has a problem which will cost it votes in some areas in May's council elections.

Anti-Semitism is more widespread within the Labour Party than was thought and complaints can not be dismissed as right-wing smears, the Momemtum movement, which backs Jeremy Corbyn, has said.

He said: "You recall the saying, "evil happens when good men do nothing".

"And I hope this Passover will mark a move to stronger and closer relations between us and everyone in the Jewish community".

"I don't want anyone ever coming back to me and saying, 'Michael, you said nothing about anti-Semitism'".

"We will not have people screaming from the outside saying, "Sling this person out, chuck that person out". We're a party for everyone".

Mr Pound said: 'My point is the Labour Party is not the enemy of Judaism. "I'm not going to rest until the Labour Party has rebuilt those bridges because we are not anti-Semitic".

The Momentum statement follows a wave of left-wing comment on social media dismissing anti-Semitism complaints as smears from the Labour leader's political opponents.

Martin, a Catholic who now sits in the House of Lords as Lord Martin of Springburn, said it was a Jewish politician - Myer Galpern, the first Jewish Lord Provost of Glasgow, Scotland - who inspired him to enter politics.

Martin is the latest in a string of senior current and former Labour Party members to speak out against what they see as the failure to act against anti-Semitism within the party's ranks.

Lord Sugar, host of The Apprentice, resigned from the Labour party in 2015 in protest at its stance on business.

Condemning her support for. Garrard, a retired property developer, had given Labour around £1.5m ($2.1 million) under three different leaders since 2003. "I have never received such a disgusting email", he said. I have watched with dismay and foreboding the manner in which the leadership has, in my view, over the last two years, conducted itself.

"I consider that it has supported and endorsed the most blatant acts of antisemitism", Garrard added.

"Accusations of antisemitism should not and can not be dismissed simply as right-wing smears nor as the result of conspiracies".

The group accused the party of failing to deal satisfactorily with the problem and said it had begun a process with external groups of developing antisemitism awareness training for Labour members.

Labour MP and shadow chancellor John McDonnell tweeted to say people had contacted regarding the tweet and "appealed" to Lord Sugar to "delete and disown it".

The Labour Party has been under fire all week for not adequately addressing anti-Semitism in its ranks, after Corbyn defended an anti-Semitic mural in east London.
