Google Shutting Down goo.gl URL Shortener Next Year

The service is still active, but starting April 18, Google says that only existing registered users will be able to shorten links via their goo.gl account console.

Google unveiled URL shortener "goo.gl" back in 2009, but it has now announced that it will start shutting the service down next month and a complete closure by 2019. The support for goo.gl will be turned down over the coming weeks and will be replaced with with Firebase Dynamic Links (FDL).

Those who have never created new links over the goog.ly service will not be able to use it after 13 April 2018. FDLs are smart URLs that can send existing and potential users to any location within an iOS, Android or web app, Web service. This does not means those links will still not redirect as intended, as they will, it just means there will be no additional benefits associated with using a URL shortener service.

As far as consumers go, they can continue to use all features of the goo.gl console until March 30, 2019. However, Android Police pointed out that FDLs shouldn't technically be referred to as the replacement of goo.gl short links. For example, I purchased the jaduino.me domain and after it was linked with Bit.ly, it became my shortened URL. He noted that the move has to do with the company's decision to refocus its efforts as it transitions to another service that will fill the void. If you are looking to create new short links, we recommend you use Firebase Dynamic Links or check out popular services like Bitly and Ow.ly as an alternative. Link continue to redirect properly. First, it was used for Google Toolbar and Feedburner, but it became goo.gl and opened up to the public in September 2010.
