SpaceX launches rocket carrying 10 communication satellites

The private space company's Falcon 9 rocket blasted off from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California at 7:23 a.m. and began deploying the satellites into low Earth orbit roughly an hour afterward.

Per the reports, SpaceX used an recovered first stage booster which was recovered and refurbished to be used as the first stage in the Friday launch. The 10 Iridium NEXT satellites launched today were successfully delivered to orbital plane one where they will replace first generation satellites over the next 30 days.

Falcon 9's first stage for the Iridium-5 mission previously supported the Iridium-3 mission from SLC-4E in October 2017.

While SpaceX typically provides live video of its non-classified launches through payload separation, SpaceX ended Friday's video feed shortly before the rocket's second-stage engine stopped firing.

It was not immediately clear why a remote sensing license was an issue for SpaceX on Friday's mission when SpaceX has live streamed the launch of previous missions without issue.

The fairing rests on the top of the rocket, and it acts as a shield for the satellites during launch. This year, the fifth launch in the row took place on Friday where it sent 10 satellites to replace its old and retiring satellites that were launched with a lifespan of just seven years in the 1990s and early 2000s. The company built 81 satellites with plans to keep nine in space as on-orbit spares and six as ground spares.

"Iridium is the only mobile voice and data satellite communications network that spans the entire globe". Iridium has tapped SpaceX to launch 75 Iridium Next satellites to build up their communications constellation in orbit.

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk aims to make rockets as reusable as commercial airplanes, bringing down the cost of spaceflight and boosting efficiency.

The company has a high-speed ship with an enormous net structure created to catch half of a fairing as it descends under a parafoil. Doing helo drop tests in next few weeks to solve'.

Musk revealed in a tweet that his company was attempting the recovery of the fairing with a ship, named Mr Steven.
