Sea of Thieves Death Cost has been told to walk the plank

Sea of Thieves Death Cost has been told to walk the plank

But in a forum post late last week, Rare announced a coming "death cost" feature would add a "small gold fee" to be deducted every time your character dies, upping the stakes and presumably providing additional motivation to avoiding those unplanned deaths. All fair concerns, of course, given the sometimes austere nature of Sea of Thieves.

Rare's awareness of issues surrounding the game suggests that living a vicarious pirate's life will only become more fun as Sea of Thieves evolves. Should the gameplay element have been implemented, though, one could argue that Rare might have been able to incorporate it in a meaningful way that's similar to how other titles that take away in-game currency for dying.

Sea of Thieves is now available on Xbox One and PC. "Do you own this game or app?" the error message asks. "We will share an update on this and the other top feedback points and our thoughts on them later this week". If you want to get into details, there is a more specific merchant cheat sheet that can help you get more important locations. But this so-called "Death Tax" proved unpopular with numerous game's most dedicated players across Reddit and other forums.

On Twitter Joe Neate, Executive Producer on Sea of Thieves, announced the team at Rare has "heard the feedback" regarding the proposed system, which wouldsee players incurring a cost from the Ferryman each time they died. Neate went on to thank players for "the honest feedback & discussion on this" subject.

Please note, we never meant to charge players for PvP related deaths, as we understand the negative impact this would have on player experience.
