Gunman, 2 others critically injured during shooting at UAB Highland Hospital

Birmingham Police surrounded UAB Highlands Hospital on Wednesday evening after reports that a gunman had shot an employee and an additional person before turning the gun on himself. Thursday morning, officials identified the victim who was killed as 63-year-old Nancy Swift, of Pelham.

Officers from the Birmingham Police Department responded to an active shooter situation and found two employees suffering from gunshot wounds.

One victim died, while the second is said to be in stable condition, according to Williston.

The suspected gunman was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in a third-floor emergency room. He is an employee of STERIS, an infection prevention company that UAB contracts with.

'There is no threat to the public, ' Lt. Peter Williston shared once everything was clear after 8pm, reports AL.com.

A campus alert was issued at UAB shortly after the incident and students and staff were told to shelter in place.

UAB tweeted late Wednesday that all surgeries scheduled for Thursday at the hospital where the shooting occurred were being canceled.

The shooting took place on the second floor of UAB Highlands, police said.
